Feb 2022 musicals music-hall guy-with-piano
@otagoseaburials wrote the lyric
@timfatchen treated it as a fast sketch for a musical which doesn't exist, as the music and words go a bit beyond the music-hall schtick. Indeed, it could be a wordle-inspired musical, on the pain of multiple meaning in English words and the confusion of spelling....

In my Oxford Dictionary,
Near two hundred thousand words
Some play well for Oxford,
Some play seconds or thirds
But for all those tools of expression,
The undisputed star?
Ladies and gentlemen,
If you please,
Let me introduce to you the Bar
CH:
There are bars of soap, bars of gold
Bars off the Barrier Reef
Bars full of lawyers, barristers all
Pursuing injunctive relief
Signal bars on your mobile phone
Bars on the jail when you've overblown,
Bars to get drunk in on your own…
Let's raise a toast up to the Bar
Dives, saloons, and gin-joints
Where everyone’s a star
Please welcome the hardest working word,
Let's shout the mighty Bar
V:
Now you | might be thinking I’m | too much a fan,
That I’ve | taken this too | far
But | those who doubt should | understand
Just how | powerful three letters | are
With some | little thought and ex | tension
Be| hold our compact | star
How | many other words could | pull this off:
You can | even get barred from a | bar.

Laughed out loud when you informed me that I would be introduced to The Bar.
Noticing the sus chords where we welcome, to resolve when Our Word enters and takes a bow in every chorus.

WOW, this is exquisitely rhymed, sung and played, I really enjoyed it!
@p3t3h4rv3y Feb 2022
Excellent Thackray-esque musical hall turn
@andrea Feb 2022
Brilliant! Clever and fun lyrics. Love the piano and performance. I totally get a musical feel. I need to hear that again! Great collab!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
Very clever idea from Andrew and perfect for such a fun delivery from Tim. Too much fun!
@blindkiwi Feb 2022
Very clever writing and excellent Tom Lehreresque delivery from Tim. Or should I call you barry?
@johnpeekstok Feb 2022
I envision a musical where all the characters are words that interact with each other in various ways. This is good rollicking, word-nerdy fun.
@popmythology Feb 2022
Absolutely delightful! My favorite line was "you can even get barred from a bar." Tim was the perfect, ideal collaborator for these lyrics, bar none!
@mikeb Feb 2022
Fun lyrics and performance, like a solo-played Gilbert and Sullivan!
@roddy Feb 2022
Great collar. Witty lyrics and music with a very nice vocal delivery. It's a classic.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
I absolutely love this!!! Great writing and I love Tim's delivery. Cheeky to the max and fun overall, and I'll meet you at the bar!

Writing a song for a non existent musical is such a fun premise - I may have to try that! The chord progression is really fun, I like how it makes the chorus feel like it’s escalating.

Oh, this is by far the nerdiest song that I've heard all FAWM, chaps. Splendidly well done. (applauds)
And I say this as someone who used to browse the literature section of the Guinness Book of Records (which has an entry for the most homophonous word—something that sounds the same, but may be spelled differently—in English, and that's "rays / raze / raise.")
