I went sailing. Such a relaxing endeavour. And there's always ibuprofen. And gin.
It's good to know we have our own personal angels watching over us. But why do listeners believe this is but a story? It's a musication of my sailing log from 8 Feb 2022...
oh...and...I am the very model of a modern cat-yawl sailing master. And some might recognise the eight pom pom chords at each break as those from Sir Joseph Porter in HMS Pinafore, although the rest bears no melodic or harmonic resemblance, though the feel is there.
THUS SPAKE THE HUBRIS ANGEL

I thought I'd sail my boat again, upon my private sea,
A vast freshwater lake with rarely any sail but me.
But then the Hubris Angel woke
And rose in rage, and thus she spoke:
"Your private sea you think it be? Well, I'll fix that for thee...
What you need, hubristic lad, is some humility!"
She changed the weather so the wind was blowing foul for me,
And my departure I delayed, until near time for tea.
Then "I can cope with this", said I,
I'll motorsail in this wind's eye"
The Hubris Angel spat a chip: "I'll fix him good" said she,
And rammed me into a mooring pole to teach humility.
Next morn, the wind still whistling, I checked the damaged bow.
"Hey! I've had worse!" I said "and so I think I'll sail out now".
Again the Hubris Angel spoke:
"Take notice now! I'm not a joke!
I'll fix you now I'm wide awake: you think to beat out on the lake,
But what you'll get, hubristic lad, Is a dose of humility."
Out into a semi-gale upon my private sea.
I'd beat out to the middle and then run home to tea
Again the Hubris Angel spake
"Oh yeah? No way to tea you'll make.
Change, wind, right around so on the nose again you'll be
And give to this hubristic lad a dose of humility."
But as to sudden wind changes, I've met worse, by and large
And thought I'd take advantage and beat down to the barrage,
And wave to seals come out to play
And dodge the nets set on the way.
But then the Hubris Angel struck and grounded me on lakebed muck
"Take the mud, hubristic lud, and learn humility!"
"I've seen worse mud for sure" sez I, and slowly came about,
"And even done the Volga thing to get the boat dug out"
"You've seen worse?" the Angel squalled
"Take 40 knots then! Have a ball!
Yeah, now your sails are flogging free, you're on your side, you're all at sea,
Sucks to you, hubristic lad, you'll learn humility!"
"Nowhere bad as waterspouts that hit me long ago!
But now, to moor and sip my gin, to harbour I will go"
This time the Angel in her wrath
Tried to break me on the wharf
But as I bounced back from the crash and moored me admirably
The Hubris Angel moaned "Why won't you learn humility?"
"I give up" the Hubris Angel said, despondently
"There seems no way that I can teach this lad humility.
So here's the Hubris Angel Curse:
Tomorrow morn your hurts you'll nurse,
You'll ache and moan from all you've done, eat ibruprofen by the ton
That's what you'll get, hubristic lad, in lieu of humility.

Excellent and entertaining story. Wonderful rhymes & lyrics. ”even done the Volga thing” was my favourite.
@nancycunning Mar 2022
What a fun Gilbert and Sullivan-y sea-story-shanty. Hope you and your angel have both recovered....
@janeg Mar 2022
Impossible not to smile throughout! And there should be a hubris angel.
@seanbrennan Mar 2022
This has a genuine shanty feel - maybe a bit sophisticated for a true eighteenth-century worksong, but all the same, I could absolutely see some bawdy, boastful sailor singing this to shipmates below deck at night.

This put a huge grin on my face here in Catalunya. Of course it's a close cousin of the highly entertaining you submitted a couple of FAWMs back, which IMS was told over several songs.
This is more precise and bouncier. It has a very "HMS Pinafore" feel to it. Indeed I think you are a worthy successor to G&S in so many ways.

Oh Tim you made me smile this morning. A quite brilliant little story and oooo the sea is definitely my second home, even if i don't always hear the little sea flute refrain in my head when i'm there. Plenty for me to catch up on with your good self. Keep em coming
@juoppis Feb 2022
One of the best I've heard this FAWM! Made me laugh all the way from the start to the end.
The "nautical theme" in the middle sounds like the Hubris Angel laughing at you and finding out new ways to educate you.
@tseaver Feb 2022
Marvelous! I was hoping somebody would take up the gauntlet of Stomping at the Savoy. The piping is glorious. An enormous dose of Vitamin I seems a bargain for escaping all that peril.
@karan Feb 2022
Oh my goodness, what an amazing story, and how exquisitely sung and played!
@scottlake Feb 2022
Tim, this needs a cartoon! It's an audible cartoon, which is such a credit to your writing and playing - I absolutely love the story and can relate. In 2014 I had the hubris angel speak to me about not the sea but the skis!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
marvelous, adorable, entertaining what else to say! you just do this stuff so well! love this
@metalfoot Feb 2022
This was very amusing and enjoyable! The hubris angel will get you coming or going!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
As I'm sure is not a surprise, I'm quite familiar with the Music Hall genre, and you are absolutely spot on with this. Great wordplay, cheery music, and a cheeky delivery. Great job!
@pearlmanhattan Feb 2022
Gilbert and Sullivan would enjoy this quite a bit, I think! I love the hornpipe intro and descants! The story flows so well, and such good life lessons! Also, Modern Major General mostly scans well, just sayin'. Well done, my friend!
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
What wonderful story telling and what a great story! I love this so much and makes me want to take my little sail boat out - but we have about 14 inches of ice on the lake right now. I can also relate to the last stanza !
@blindkiwi Feb 2022
Nooooooo not the mud! Anything but the mud, not in my boat you dont! Jolly tale of woe indeed, love the hornpipe thingy, adds a definite nautical flavour to it :) Nice work Tîm.
