Feb 2022 music-box lullaby foreboding cello
Spent too much time in recording again, but I wanted to mic cello rather than program the strings for this one. Which took a fair amount of time and processing because I don't claim to be a cellist.
The idea here is that the music conveys a different emotion than the lyric, to a certain extent. A lullaby of rest sung by someone who is restless, and not totally sold on the comfort they're trying to give. Sort of an unreliable narrator.
Anyway, I'm moving on from it now. I like it, and I hope you do too.
Close your eyes now, my love
Lay your head on my chest
There's no wolf at the door
Just the wind from the west
Whispering leaves on the stair
From the wood, she's not there
So close your eyes and sleep in safety
There is warmth in her fur
Something pure in her power
Though the beauty she wears
Is a poison flower
Her footsteps are soft,
Save the scratch of her claws
But she's far away, so sleep in safety
In safety, in safety
Close your eyes and hush

lovely intimacy with the music box, the delivery and the sing-song melody.

thing one: unreliable narrators are TOTALLY my jam and anxiety ridden lullabys are totally my wheelhouse
thing two: are you playing a kalimba?
thing three: beautiful cello!!!
thing four: swooning over the second verse. it's so. good! There is warmth in her fur
Something pure in her power
Though the beauty she wears
Is a poison flower
Her footsteps are soft,
Save the scratch of her claws
excellent job!

I love this sort of juxtaposition. It adds a whole nuther dimension to a song. This is suitably creepy and gorgeous at the same time.
The way it develops is fantastic too. Kudos on the cello work, both the performance and the production. In fact. the whole production is magical. I love this song!

Very cool concept, and nicely produced. Anything with cello is a win for me.
Your vocals do have that "I'm trying to sing a lullaby, but not really buying it" vibe. Nice job.

Oh my. The sound here is absolutely glorious (my FAWM isn't about production, but this is definitely worth the time you put into it). And I love, love, love that the wolf that ISN'T there has warm fur and power and so many details that you can see her . . . A beautifully creepy lullaby.

Nice write: the ambiguity works well. The near whisper underlines the sense of looming peril. Love the cello here.

It always makes me a bit sad that the wolf gets such a bad rap, but that said, this is a really well written lyric, and you achieved exactly what you were going for. Your calm, soothing voice carries this on that sweet musical bed, giving it exactly the right unsettling edge. I could see it in something like the Witcher, or any of the similar gothic novel sorts of series that are so popular right now. It's also reminiscent of the song Come Little Children in the movie Hocus Pocus. Super well done!

Oh, the wolf is right there. I'm not fooled...
Finally the cello arrives, and sounds good.
