I saw the forum thread, and of course I couldn't resist adding to the Haunted Banjo fun.
I like train whistles and I like hooting owls
I like rolling thunder and I like coyote howls
and way off in the distance, on the far side of the hills
some nights I hear a sweet sound that gives me good chills
I hear an otherworldly twang when the wind it blows just so
A ghost who’s pickin’ just for me on a haunted banjo
Our town is in the valley and the hills are filled with tales
of men of constant sorrow and women in black veils
I love a good ghost story, afraid I surely ain’t
I long for the lullaby of the banjo-pickin’ haint
I hear that otherworldly twang and in my soul I know
that ghost is pickin’ just for me on a haunted banjo

Aren't all banjo haunted ? Not just because they are made of skin. But each of their string, once plucked, seem to open the door of a forgotten universe. Or is it just me ?
Love the mood, the picking and the story here !

Good choice to sing so low, under the nice bright banjo. I love the idea of someone (even a ghost) picking just for me. Fun banjo solo at the end!

Your lower register singing is just perfect for this song! The banjo and the chords that you played on it are spooky....haha...I think that this may be my new favorite genre. Super cool song!

The perfect fusion of vocals and banjo make this a great campfire story. Love also the reference to two other haunting songs of note.

The spooky quality this song has and how the recording sounds like it's really up close. Kinda like sitting in a circle around a campfire or something, really makes this for me. I like the story.

Good chills. Your picking style has become recognizable for me. I enjoyed your tale. Lovely ending.
@tseaver Feb 2022
Fun write: "Good chills" is a great line for such a song. The "Black Veil" and "Constant Sorrow" references are genius. And huge props for pulling in "haint": I've got a song in mind for this year called "Haint Blue."
You've demonstrated again for the unbelieving that a minor banjo tune is possible!

ooooh, I loove how this is all kinds of throwback fun rolled up into one......haunted banjo.

This was fun, great bouncy yet spooky banjo picking. Great opening couplet that grabbed me immediately and I love the references to classic folk songs in the opening couplet of verse two.
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
yup i like all thos e things as well! heard most in the last hour! Great last verse paints the picture. Nice one mate
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
nice one! love the shout outs to those great haunted tales 'long black veil' and 'man of constant sorrow'... me, if i'm gonna be haunted by a banjo player, I kind of hope it's Jerry Garcia in his early banjo days :)
love that melody line that you play faster at the end for that final bit- really effective! nicely done, as always!
@sheilerk Feb 2022
This was a haunting tune. Well, in a manner of speaking ;)
This plucks all the right strings for me, It has so many of my favorite things, train whistles, hooting owls, coyote howls, and a sweet, haunting banjo, I mean haunted banjo! I like the nod to the "man of constant sorrow" too. I really enjoyed this!
@scubed Feb 2022
Ghost pickin’ a haunted banjo - love it! Mighty fine banjo playing a a great story. I have deep roots in southern Appalachia, so I’m particularly fond of the line “I long for the lullaby of the banjo-pickin’ haint.”
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Gotta love a haunted banjo! This was a fab idea and song!
@mandolinda Feb 2022
What a great concept, haunted banjo. Really thought the finger picking’ made the story, a lullaby on a banjo. Nice one.

Haunted banjo! What a cool banjo sound and so fitting for these lyrics! Vocals are delivered perfectly!
