My father says my songs are too dark. The criticism reaches from the English morality tales from the 1600s ("if you sleep with that one, someone will cut your head off") to the murder ballads of the 1800s ("he slept with that one and then cut her head off") to the alt-country Outlaw ballads of the 1970s ("I'm the kind of guy who would sleep with that one and also cut someone's head off").
My goal here is to sing a song about those old dark and depressing sad sack songs, and somehow connect them -- in a more spritely chorus -- to the way I find positivity in these songs, and how it is that they make me happy, but that I am setting that aside for a moment, to sing cheery and light for him.....because he damned well deserves it.
Now that I have shared this I have to finish it.
Lefty killed his friend just for the money
Tom Dooley killed poor Laurie for his pride
I pray sometimes for the life of little Omie.........
[broken here -- this is seriously only a fragment]
This is a sun song, shining on your evening lake
This is a sun song, burning off the morning dew
It rings forever, and it rings [something less cheesy than 'true]
And I will sing your son song each day for you

There's a tone you hit when you sing "dew" that is so sweet and pure. I really like it, and am glad you've put it up here to encourage yourself to finish it. Also, the sun/son word play as a song for your dad is delightful.
