It dawned on me yesterday playing with our 2 year old daughter that she's suddenly cracked the code to putting together Duplo pieces (is that what the rest of the world calls big Lego?). Very proud moment. Hopefully this means that she'll become obsessed with it and entertain herself for hours making things... rather than demanding that I wear a hand puppet and put on a character voice all morning when I'm trying to eat breakfast!
I'm realising that I need to simplify my songwriting to get more songs up on the board, and this was a meager attempt at that...
Simple chords, check.
Simple lyrics, check.
Simple Melody, check...
Then I took a detour and decided to go with an odd time signature that I couldn't play and sing at the same time... and wanted to throw more vocals/instruments in so I don't sound so naked.
Well, simple enough.
What to make of the day? I'll follow you lead the way
One brick at a time, build the world in your mind
Reach on up to the clouds, sit in the here and the now
who cares what we create, Tear it all down, and build it back up again
build it up, build it back up again
build it up, tear it back down again
Build it up, one brick at a time
build the world in your mind, show your world to the blind
tear it down, tear it down
build it up, build it back up again

I love the simplicity of this song. The guitar and bass feels just right. And smooth vocals.

Lovely, beautiful piece. Jealous of your guitating and interesting chordage!
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
Haha, that's what I end up doing when I try to do something simple! Love the finger picking. Very pastoral. I really like the melody line on the "build the world..." line. Lovely little folk ditty!

This is lovely. Great tone with the guitar - what guitar do you have and how did you record it? I got some strong Nick Drake vibes with a little Pink Floyd thrown in. Only thing I'd suggest is that maybe having a descending melody for the line 'build it up' a little cognitively dissonant? Great work in any case, will definitely listen to this again.

Love how natural and relaxed you make the sevens sound. Gorgeous sound to this, warm and open. Great slide too. Top stuff.
@theawkwardsleep Feb 2022
Doubtful that will happen. Those 2 year olds don't usually play anything for long haha This song is amazing. Its gorgeous and well mixed. Dreamy. you have a real knack for creating luscious soundscapes. -ru

This is really beautiful stuff. It's such a you piece this one - you're so good at these kind of atmospheric, laid back, emotive pieces. Vocals sound great and those little bits of slide guitar are delicious. I'm also a big fan of circa 2 1/2 minute tracks that keep you wanting more! Going in for another listen :)

Love the glimpse into the song building process and I love the song. Very gentle track, sweet vox and great metaphor in the lyrics.
@adforperu Feb 2022
Ahh, lovely and soft. Those harmonies are a dream, and the slide guitar is like a double dream. Or something. Stunner!
@kadmad202 Feb 2022
I love this - a simple song suddenly unpredictable. Nice gentle vibe and beautiful arrangement.
@pcob1993 Feb 2022
This is very beautiful indeed, the arrangement is gorgeous.. and the singing?? Killer. I love the minor shifts.... absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much.. so inspiring.

Such a pretty guitar part! This is dreamy, I like how the guitar is pretty dry and the vox are reverby but it doesn't suffer from that "everything's in a different room" feel at all. Presumably some kind of witchcraft involved.
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
Gosh this is beautiful. That slide (?) guitar is really lovely. Simple but deceptively complex songs are the best kind.
@judypie Feb 2022
It sounds gorgeous, I love it! Yasss to her skillin’!
@celineellis Feb 2022
this is so nice - love the vocal treatment and the classical guitar they go so well together. that ghostly electric guitar in the background is really atmospheric too! very nice!
