this one took a while. It was originally going to be something completely different, but then it wasn't.
I really don't play piano, so as an experiment I started with a piano part. Then I played a guitar part so I could figure out what the chords were. Then a bass part. Drums are fake drums from Logic, as usual. I'm very much not a jazz or lounge guy. So this is a little weird.
She moves through
she does not wait
it's your heart
she manipulates
CHORUS:
You can say she's evil
but she gets things done
you're only hurting
because you know she won
she was a teacher
she taught me well
taught me how to live
in a living hell
genius is as genius does
when genius is the one you love
she gets every little thing she wants
cause she's made herself the chosen one
Narcissism is an ugly sin
everyone you love imprisoned
what the hell let's give it a spin
the outcome might be interesting

I really enjoyed this. Starting a song on an unfamiliar instrument can create interesting stuff, and that's one perfect example! Your voice is very evocative. I like the interplay between the piano and guitar parts. The only critique I have is that things didn't seem to groove together, especially with the drums. I think it's partly timing issues, and partly groove. Since you use logic, thought I'd mention this: there's a "groove" function you can use to make your instruments groove better together. Hope that helps!

Fun hearing what you were up to a few weeks ago, which now seems so long ago. Your non-lounge approach lends an appropriate intensity to the words. Kind of a slow-burn evil. I like the twisty attraction-repulsion vibe, especially in the last verse.

I really like starting from an instrument I don't normally play because i come up with new things, instead of going back to the old muscle memory.
The song is lovely, but for some reason I really loved the guitar part. Really nice song!

Your process sounds familiar - often I go to piano when I want a melody, and to get out of the acoustic guitar chords-first approach.
Your voice is so achingly soulful here, and those are some powerful lyrics (great last verse). A super slow-burn song - I dig that piano sound a lot.

You have such a unique and beautiful quality to your voice. It's so clear and strong yet enveloped in this softness. This is the first time I've heard one of your songs, so it will be interesting to see what is more "usual" for you, but I think this song sounds great! The instruments and arrangement also work well with the lyrics, but for me it's really your voice that wins the day.

That's a sweet vocal. I like how it ambles along with that languid bass line. It's an interesting lyric. She's not evil...but she gets things done: that grabbed my attention, for sure. I've met this sort of genius :)

Thanks for the listen and comments :-) ...I really like the way this sounds: vocal is very clear (great tone), great sense of space, solid groove, and I feel the hard-panned electric piano and guitar was a very good choice. Good write, nice job.

I like the way the piano ambles a bit in an expressive way, and the bass sounds like it is typing the song together. That's an interesting way to figure out piano, i.e. by figuring out the guitar over it - I might have to try that!

It might be out of your wheel house but it sounds good. It’s always fun to step out and challenge ourselves. I really like how smooth and laid back it feels.

Yes, kinda lounge but it is definitely an Eric Agner song. The loose band vibe amplifies the tension in the lyric. I would say that this is a successful experiment.
