@davis1962 gave me the prompt "Chickens in the Bedroom" in the morning on his way to go skiing, then came home and wrote the chorus and the music and recorded it.
Chickens in the bedroom
Chickens in the bedroom
Big holes in the floor
We slept in the kitchen
There wudn't any door
Just me and my three cousins
The summer I turned four
Chickens in the bedroom
Big holes in the floor
Never spent much time inside
We ate out in the yard
We had a folding table
We all had decks of cards
War and gin rummy
At first the rules were hard
Never spent much time inside
We ate out in the yard
Ooooooh Those summer days
All we did was play
Oooooh, those summer days
When my mama sent us away
Blackberry cobbler
Jars of lemonade
Pimento cheese in triangles
Stacked up on a tray
The sandwiches were gritty
The dirt was all red clay
Blackberry cobbler
Jars of lemonade
Grandma was still cooking then
She died when I turned five
Grandma was still kicking then
Grandpa still would drive
Everything was different while Grandma was alive
Grandma was still cooking then
She died when I turned five
Ooooooh, those summer days
Ooooooh, all we did was play
Oooooh, those summer days
When mama sent us away
Oooooh, those summer days
Ooooooh, all we did was play
Oooooh, those summer days
When mama sent us away
When my mama sent us away

What a delightful country song! So many wonderful details in these lyrics! This sounds just like a big old batch of my own childhood memories! And the music and singing really brings these words to life in an authentic country ballad way! Congratulations to both of you for this fine song!

Big smiles in this listener. I think I've seen that farmhouse. I absolutely love the bookended stanzas you're using. Makes it all so solid. And congrats with putting the pathos into it about Grandma .. lovely delivery on "was different while Grandma was alive" .. the song could have stayed a shallower nostalgia, but that made it real, for me anyway.

Awww, this is so sweet! Lucky you, having such a fine memory lane to stroll down. This song has such a comfortable, casual feel that's really engaging. The warmth of the lyrics, melody and music is contagious. What a lovely time I had listening to this wonderful song.!

Just love this. What a visual, descriptive story, with all the foods, etc. “chickens in the bedroom, big holes in the floor,” can’t stop seeing that picture. “When momma sent us away.” I think we all had this mama… Love the repetitive lines. And the genuine vocal delivery and guitar picking/strumming, just perfect, with the harmonies being the cherry (or blackberries) on top.

Descriptions so vivd I can smell them them. And such apt, fun music!

Lovely guitar work, great song, beautiful ooooohh’s :)

cool! the music was given and the song came to life! And yes, it was sorta how I imagined it might be sung. I also like your quote about not letting the facts get in the way of a good story. I'm going to use that on certain members of my family who always let the facts hinder the story lol. nice work and a catchy tune.

Never let facts get in the way of a good story. That is what my Mama's Daddy taught me @rdavis1962. I love the music and the chorus and the harmonies and singing. Thank you.

This is how Nancy remembers my childhood. Funny she wasn't even born at that time but her memory is quite vivid!

I hope this one gets music - it's great! You know how to tell a story with little details.
