I was raised in a Christian household. Since then I've been drawn to a lot of Buddhist teachings of emptiness. I've taken time to do a lot of my own spiritual self-seeking. Sometimes I feel solid and certain in it, sometimes not. This song comes out of that mixture.
Oh to give the gifts you give
Then take them all away
The dawn the burning high noon
The aching dusk of a holiday
I don’t feel quite at home
Not a visitor
Lost in a borrowed day
The vacuum laughs the half truth
“Here you’ll forever stay”
Though empty, the comfort I carry
It helps me navigate
So Lord will you take it all away?
Oh to hold the hand you hold
Then give it all away
The shooting star that you are
To burn up and fade away
Don’t feel quite at home you say
What a waste, what a waste
But the vacuum laughs the half truth
“Here you’ll forever stay”
Though empty, the comfort I carry
It helps me navigate
So Lord will you take it all away?
In the morning I’ll bathe all in your name
And I’ll see with the clear eyes you gave me
All that you’ve made
In the evening I’ll boil water just like yesterday
Lord will you take it all away?
Lord will you take it all away?

Oh I feel this one! I’ve really been leaning into that mixture of certainty and doubt, knowing and questioning, the “yes, ands” of life. This song captures that feeling well. I especially like the picked guitar and your phrasing on “Lord will you take it all away?” Wonderful skirmish!

The evoked a really cool Nick Drake feel for me. The rhythms in the plucking are lovely, and I like the melody a lot. Very cool tune!

What a poignant song. I'm enjoying the chance to dig into these lyrics, and I also enjoyed the soaring melody with the great fingerpicking. Ooh, and the cool vocal word painting on the word "navigate." Nice.

This is really nice. Your playing's excellent, and the vocals are really engaging, and dynamically interesting - they hold your attention. Great lyric too.

Good dynamics with the stops and the "naked" verse at the end. It really conveys your feelings. Nice work.

Love your idea of connecting this to Buddhist philosophy. really love the sentiments and concepts here. Love the voice and guitar work!

Love the idea that a vacuum talks . Like the way that you lengthen words and sing the melody on a single world.

Some nice guitar picking. I like where you’ve taken the prompt, a tale looking for self actualisation

Good questions you ask. Your song reminds me of the impermanence of most ... things, ideas and people.

"The aching dusk of a holiday" is a gut punch of a line. So well done. Love the way your melody rides over the guitar part. And such an original take on the prompt. Wonderful song.

A deep moody meditation on wanting to escape. There’s enough universality in this that I think most listeners would relate to the mood and the scenes.
