Any Dress She Likes
© Bill White
verse 1
she can wear any dress she likes
but there is only one she has
the boys in the snow are singing Christmas songs
but she listens only to jazz
chorus
she has the world on a string
the devil by the tail
she can wear any dress she wants
but she will never catch the whale
verse 2
she can bathe in the bouquet of a varied essence
but may wear only one perfume
and the staircase of heaven crosses many mansions
but she returns always to the same room
bridge
her blouse is too tight
her pants never fit
dresses are the only thing
she feels comfortable in
chorus
she has the world on a string
the devil by the tail
she can wear any dress she wants
but she will never catch the whale

There is an Eastern European feel to this melody and vocal delivery.
I am always impressed by Bill's "portraits" in verse and this one is no exception. This evokes a sympathy for the subject of the portrait and leaves just enough out of the picture for us to fill in the details.

Great cryptic lyrics. Really can take the meaning into many different directions. Very well sung, loved the variations in the vocal delivery to emphasize the words. Very cool mystical piano playing as well!

I have no idea what the whale is, but I enjoyed how dramatic this song felt. Kinda reminded me of Tori Amos a bit. Nice collab!

Oh, @billwhite51 --I continue to love the Dylanesque "WTF do these lyrics mean" work you do. One of the first songs I ever did in Fawm 2017 (?) was something called "Midsummer's Night" which my attempt at "poetry" and which, actually, ain't half bad sounding kind of like Shakespeare on acid. You continue to inspire me to try something different--I really want to stretch my wings on poetry/lyrics and am trying to get some poetry-reading under my belt. And how nice to have Marthie sing these wonderful lyrics. Sigh...

Ahhhh…. Lovely piano and vocals on this wonderful lyric. Two fabulous musicians and one fantastic song!

The piano playing is like a classical piece composed years ago, but it is new to me. The tone is set in the first line of the song already. Great line. Great collab!

If I could throw roses through the screen. Stunning collaboration!

To have much and only need a little; so much complexity and yet so simple. That dichotomy played out so well lyrically and musically. That is mainly why I tend to sit back and enjoy FAWM moments like this. Amazing.

Where do we go and what do we do with our talent, our skill and our opportunities? Do we pass up everything hard and worthwhile for what's easy and familiar? Lovely words, lovely voice: Any dress, indeed!
