Feb 2022 banjo hauntedbanjo throwaway silly
So last night in the Tuesday music club chat (a thing that a bunch of have done every Tues night for a while on zoom) somehow the idea of a 'haunted banjo' song challenge started. Did this little meta-fawm thing, recorded a banjo track live on the iPhone (with music memos , which in this case added these crazy drums i mixed low) and then did a vocal, also on the phone (garageband).. its a silly little thing, but hey, why not... (and the 'they called my mandolin playing a uke' thing did happen! check out this if you're curious https://fawm.org/songs/128335/ )
I tried to write about a haunted banjo
My words were silent like a Marx brother- Harpo
That reference might be too old to get
But that’s not whats making me upset
I’ll tell you what is doing me in
The other day I played the mandolin
In liner notes I said the mandolin word
But several comments were just absurd
They said nice uke playing
It’s a mandolin not a ukulele
I even said mandolin twice in the liner notes
Why are you saying ukulele?
I was asked about a banjo ghost
But that’s not what I want to talk about most
Cause maybe my mandolin is possessed
By the spirit of a ukulele that’s really pissed?
And right now I’m playing a banjo
Not a ukulele
It’s a banjo
Yes it is!
(first world problems)

Sounds great and very clever writing. I play mandolin so I get that.

Ha! Someone called my ukulele a mandolin. Funny! I said ukulele clearly in the liner notes and tag. Of course, in my case I nearly ALWAYS play ukulele. This sounds like a very scary situation for you though. Funny lyric and nicely spooked banjo.

YES YOU DID IT I was hoping you would. The banjo sounds great, and the lyrics are clever. Great take on the challenge!

Hashtag firstworldproblems, indeed. I had a theremin part called a "spooky operatic voice" earlier this week :-D I guess the thing is that when you've been doing this for as long as we have (and that reference is by no means too old for me) we tend to forget that one of the first things we had to learn to do as musicians was to identify what instruments were being used to play each part. Didja ever get played "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" in music class? I did...
Even though this was profoundly entertaining, what I want to hear now is the tale of the banjo ghost!
@scubed Feb 2022
I’m laughing out loud! I hope your poor mandolin has gotten past the trauma of being misidentified.
Great banjo playing!

Fun write!
@oaksnprairie Feb 2022
Let me say right off—nice banjo playing! I do like the idea of instruments possessed by the spirits of other instruments.
@yam655 Feb 2022
This is very fun! Nicely done!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Fun as usual. You might want to change the tag here to #hauntedbanjo, as you've got it spelled wrong.
@n24 Feb 2022
This is an excellent reaction to a frustrating comment! I love the energy in this and the BANJO playing :)

Hahaha, this is great! When I carry my ukulele around, I'm often asked if it's a violin. You have to pity the non-musicians, they don't know, and it's sad that they don't know, but it's probably not their fault. On the bright side, WE know, and we get to have all the fun :) this kept me smiling the whole time, nice job!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
You jumped on this one, and yes, the ukulele is now synonymous with any stringed instrument that isn't a guitar. LOL
Nice job.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Hahaha, this is amazing, Mike! Love the meta concept, you had me smiling all through the song!
@doglatin Feb 2022
Ha! The banjo and percussion kick off with much urgency, and your haunted banjo block/uke-mando semantics dilemma make for a very entertaining romp of a tune. I recorded a cd a few years back, and the guy whose studio I used wanted to add mando to some of my songs, but he didn't have one in the studio...so he used a uke. It worked...a bit odd sounding, but that was okay with me!
@chipwithrow Feb 2022
Well, I'll have to do that challenge!
Fun song, and a funny (and totally relatable) story. Good to hear you again, and I'll have to check out much more of your FAWM output.
Nifty chord progression, too.

I read that comment on my page the other day too. Maybe I should get out my banjo, which is not a uke.
Too funny LOL
