This song is inspired by the play Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O' Neill which I saw a production of about a month ago and studied in college. Rushed this one a little but happy to get it out. Forgot to edit out me clearing my throat in the beginning hehe. First verse is sung from POV of one of the sons, second verse is from the mother. This could probably have verses for all four characters, but who really wants to listen to that?!
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink my whiskey gonna feel alright
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink it on down oh yeah
The fog's rolling in and I feel so sad
I hate my mom and I hate my dad
Just a young lost poet in a ruined rut
Wasting all my time in Connecticut
Everyone here's hungry for the beast
It's a voluntary sabotage full on feast
Got nothing to prove
Got nothing to lose
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink my whiskey gonna feel alright
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink it on down oh yeah
Find me upstairs in the spare old room
Cause I know that the end is coming soon
Staring at these hands makes me wanna weep
Let me slowly fall into this eternal sleep
The boys don't know what I've been through
Could've had three but had a rotten two
Got nothing to prove
Got nothing to lose
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink my whiskey gonna feel alright
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink it on down oh yeah
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink my whiskey gonna feel alright
Been a long days journey into night
Gonna drink it on down oh yeah

Great flow to the lyrics and guitar in this song. "Long day's journey" section is SO catchy, just wanna sing it forever.

That chorus feels really classic, the fingerpicking is so classy too. Damn, now I want a whiskey. Apologies I wasn’t aware of the play, even though I’m an English literature graduate who has convinced himself he’s cultured. But I’m going to say you’ve done it justice anyways :)

Oooh. This is so great. Feels like the first cut on an album of songs based on classic plays. Having the perspective move from the son to the mother is inspired, and I love the way you add the second voice for the second chorus. I would sure be happy to listen to all four verses. You could just do the full set for your live shows, and stick to the best two or three for the album. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof next?

Well I for one would listen to all four verses! Not a work I'm familiar with either, but still a great concept, and a great tune! I love that melody in the chorus. and some as always beautiful guitar work.

Another catchy chorus! Keeping it simple is awesome.
I really like the way you stretch the melody at the end of the verses on "nothinnnnnn." I'm also a big fan of the "ruined rut / Connecticut" rhyme.
I am not familiar with Eugene O' Neill but cool that his work inspired yours. From your description in the liner notes, I listened to this as a duet between the son and mother.

I actually don't mind the coughing intro! Gives it a feel like sitting around the table each with their glass. Really nice bounce that serves the chorus well, really like the line "staring at these hands make me want to weep" and the guitar outro.
