I thought up the title to this as I was leaving from a short vacation in Florida on New Year's Eve, headed for home in Delaware. As usual, I just wrote it down in my phone to save for later. The rest is just a story.
My songs usually do evolve lyrically when I start working on the music, but I try to at least get a solid foundation before I pick up my guitar.
It's a thousand miles to next year
And the road spreads out ahead
What got me here
It ain't so clear
I'd be better off in bed
It's a hundred miles to last night
What started out so well
Some words, a fight
I know you're right
But that rage I couldn't quell
<bridge>
The headlights burn my eyes
Haunted by how's and why's
The many miles are ticking past
It came as no surprise
You saw through my disguise
I guess I knew this couldn't last
</bridge>
In twenty miles I'm back home
To a cold and empty room
Just me alone
Future unknown
Holed up within my gloom
It's five feet to my cellphone
But the longest of them of all
My circuit's blown
I can't attone
I'm too far gone to call.
It's a thousand miles to next year
a thousand miles to next year
a thousand miles to next year
a thousand miles to next year

I love the theme here -- for years I would open FAWM with a traveling song, usually set in the snow. The way the first lines change in time/distance is a wonderful way to develop the song.

Great catch phrase rightly repeated through out this lyric, so singable and interesting. Well done indeed

I like the idea of distance as a measure of time - I'll be interested to hear how this sounds!
