They tried to fill me with religion
But I must have sprung a leak
You can find me in a sin
At the tail end of the week
Got no time for confessions
I could spill it 'til I'm blue
I've got devils on both shoulders
Telling me just what to do
Everybody's waiting 'til I see the light
But when it comes to temptation
I won't put up a fight
For everything I want to do
They say I'll burn in Hell
So, meet me at the crossroads
'Cause I've got a soul to sell
I'll be cooking in Hell's Kitchen
And drinking in the lounge
So, save my seat
I'm on my way down
If God were alive
He'd just want us to be cool
Have some wine, be kind to animals
And don't suffer fools
He'd put an end to cruelty and suffering
And poverty and hunger, rape and murder
Suicide and AIDS and cancer
If Jesus wants me
He can call me up himself
If he doesn't have my number
He can get it off the Devil
For everything I want to do
They say I'll burn in Hell
So, meet me at the crossroads
'Cause I've got a soul to sell
I'll be cooking in Hell's Kitchen
And drinking in the lounge
So, save my seat
I'm on my way down
Well. I don't want to offend my
Sisters or brothers or my
Mothers or fathers or my
Faithful neighbors
Just because you were born in the
One true religion, praise him
True religion, lucky that you found your way
You were born, you were born in the
True religion, Praise it
True religion, say it
Oh happy day
What are the odds?
All you need to know is just to
Be good to one another
That's all you need
It don't matter what they believe
Now, what am I gonna do
When Lucifer comes for my soul?
You know the one I sold...
Sold my soul to the Devil
Now, he's come collecting
Now, he's come collecting
Jesus, what will I do?
Save me a seat
I'll be there soon
Tell that ol' Devil
Meet me at high noon
Gonna run ol' Satan
Right out of town
He'd better run
'Cause I'm on my way...
For everything I want to do
They say I'll burn in Hell
So, meet me at the crossroads
'Cause I've got a soul to sell
I'll be cooking in Hell's Kitchen
And drinking in the lounge
So, save my seat
I'm on my way down

Great playing and singing. Feels like a co-write with Ray Wylie Hubbard. You'll have 'em dancing in the brimstone.

I mean... come on. This is crazy good.
This song has a couple of tricks but it stays in its lane - confidently and absolutely owning this vibe. A celebration of breaking free of the Xtian "don't question" environment so many of us are born into.
That overcharged slide guitar that is both holding the melody and trying break free of it the whole time... creates such a tension that mimics what underlays these lyrics.
I love brilliant mix of lyrics that lean in to the stereotypes of "non-christians" being in leagues with Satan, a sensible call to just be good to one another, and then a little bit of an apology that says "hey, I'm probably offending you if you are all about this but... did you take a good look before you bought what they are selling?"
The interplay of the vocals and the slide guitar in the back half is just magical. Leaving "down" unspoken at the end of that line...
I feel like people will either get the backstory of this song or not and if they do... this delivers something I didn't know I needed so much.
Sorry, just rambling about how much I enjoyed this but:
TL;DR:
This is good. \m/

I keep trying to write this song myself, a heathen gospel number. This is far above my own attempts though. those vocals. the content, the handclaps.....this is truly excellent. I'd really appreciate your permission to play this on my FAWM radio show this week? if you can make this downloadable, or just send me the mp3 that would be amazing! XD
