Feb 2022 collab rock synth tools
wonderful collab with @crisp1 who did these lyrics
That's tools, as in hand and power tools, not the band.
Doug: Right away I liked the sound of the intro, and then the whole vibe of the music, and the fun with the tool sounds. Thanks for a great song, Justin!
Busted hammer
Rusty blade
The songs I love
Have long been played
Worn-down saw
Broken drill
But I can’t ever
Get my fill
My heart is carved
In circular grooves
Like the rings of a tree
Show the growth of the wood
The albums go round
Coarse or fine grain
Bringing joy to my being
And easing my pain
@tunecat Feb 2022
A really terse lyric that doesn’t need any more lines. Brilliant stuff
@guatecoop Feb 2022
Great sounds right off. I just love understated every element is, and each has something valuable to add. What a cool song—almost meditative. Wonderful lyrics, of course, and it doesn’t feel or sound like a collaboration. It’s so good! Well done
@bethdesombre Feb 2022
That is stunning in its simplicity. Tiny observations that add up so much. I love the connections across the images. I also like how "coarse or fine grain/bringing joy to my being" falls rhythmically.
@ofishell Feb 2022
This song has etched circular grooves into my heart. @crisp1, not a syllable is wasted in these lyrics...so well done. @jeustan the music and performance is top notch, and so well suited to the lyrics. So good.
@davidtaro Feb 2022
Oh man, I love this. So cool, very retro, like a 70s band having an insane jam. Lots of brilliant flourishes production wise with the SFX and the dynamics dipping in and out to get that circular motion - it’s very clever. ‘The albums go round’ is such a simple line but I love it :)
@zecoop Feb 2022
Right from the start, this one grabbed me. It is hypnotic with the (mostly) one note melody at the start and the effected vocals really give it a lot of interest, both the distant effect and the splitting. Excellent backing - love the insistent guitar as well as all the other bits that come and go. Wonderfully done - loved the song. :)
@rayboneor Feb 2022
This is an impressive work all around. That opening bit is so hypnotic, and then the chorus, if that's what it is, has some kind of weird, dissonant grooviness. Great lyric. I love those opening lines, the comparison of old songs to old tools. All the little touches and guitar flourishes take this to the proverbial next level. This is one of those things that's going to stick with me, I think
@dzdandcunfsd Feb 2022
Whew, this is a helluve a circular groove, one I don't want to end. The tool additions are very tastefully done. This is an excellent lyric especially just to jam on as you have here. Your vocal is knocking it out on this too a very laid back Cornell vibe going on here. Really awesome stuff!
@cleanshoes Feb 2022
These are some great lyrics from Doug, and I love what you've done with them. The tool sounds are a great touch. It would have been easy to overdo the novelty, but you've turned this into a legit jam, the kind of chill synth rock you want on repeat. The drums sound great, too!
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
I like the vibe of this collab. It's got a retro feel to it and the use of the tool samples is a great idea. Love the chugging guitars and the brushed drums. The heart/rings of a tree image is an excellent extended simile.
@judypie Feb 2022
Some fiiiine sounds going on here! What a fun workshop! :D
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
Love the mechanistic repetitiveness, with the light drum pattern and the neat little bass motif and the rhythmic jangle on the guitar. Perfectly matches up with the words. Love the reverb and FX on the vocal too. Great collaboration.
@sph Feb 2022
Cool dynamics in this tune. You know how create suspense. I'm a fan!
Great lyrics by Doug as well!
@elainedimasi Feb 2022
This is amazing also. I don't know what to say. Congrats to you both for finding each other?
SUCH good delivery and SUCH a fine touch with those close and distant music and tool sounds, nothing competing, just, coexisting, like the notes in all those suspended chords right next to each other.
@splittybooms Feb 2022
Great vocal melody for these very cool lyrics.
The addition of the tool sounds is awesome.
Such sway to this track; love the sound of the drum brushes.
That chorus is really nice, both the lyrics and the melody.
Digging everything about this.
Great team-up.
@ltunes Feb 2022
Nicely done! I love the lyrics and the vibe of this song.
@mikeb Feb 2022
Very trippy music! The tool sounds are a great touch to emphasize the lyrics.
@jerrypettit Feb 2022
Great job on this, guys! Terrific lyric and wonderful arrangement.
Constructive criticism: I think the vocal is mixed too low (although I probably mix mine too high, so what do I know?) ;-)
That vocal IS a nice one--nice music bed.
@nahlej381 Feb 2022
A fool and his tools are quickly separated! This is dope ! Very nice collaboration fellas! Fun listen, the synths are very thoughtful the foley recordings of tools were an excellent touch
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
You have done some really cool collabs with Doug and this is no exception, some if those chords keep you just on the edge , some lovely whirly noises in there (thats my tech term) and your vox is spot on
@wylddandelyon Feb 2022
I enjoyed this but I'm too sleepy to make a coherent comment. But I wanted to let you know I stopped by.
@littlespiral Feb 2022
great sound and vibe. well recorded. love the voice. sounds like something i would have listened to on repeat in the 90s. hell maybe i'll listen on repeat now.
@daveyboy103 Feb 2022
Lovely sounds , very reminiscent of David Gray.
Smooth stuff.
