It hurts my soul to write a country song that mentions church and fish and high school football. I swear I'm not a hack, but this is how it's come together so far. Also sorry for the swearing; I know it's a crutch but all the voices in my head are vulgar.
It’s been all down hill from happy
Since i was when i was just a little kid
It sort of happened, I wish it didn’t but it did
Go back a couple of years a go
Say 1995
There was things to do
That wasn’t on line
Watch the Beavers Play on Friday Night
Go to church if we had time
All in all
A pretty good life
We’d thought until the turn of the century
This way to live would not appeal to the rich
But it happened
I wish it didn’t
But it did
The first sign that came rolling by
Blue license plates
From the place that they make movies
And the golden gate
The second sign held up by wires
Said Keep Away
And more fences seem to grow up
Go up every dya
And they’re taking over the river banks
Where my dad and i used to fish
That’s hwo it happened
I wish it didn’t
But it did
My dream since i was five years old
A little cabin by the side of the lake
Working hard and saving up
Is all it would take
But scores of
second homes by the fishing holes
Are owned by folks from Ohio
And if one comes up the numbers
Make me shake
We’d finally saved up just enough
Then half the motherfucking world got sick
Yeah it happened,
I wish it didn’t
But it did
I got two good kids
And one good wive
A job that pays all right
And places I like to go
To get my self in line
Everyone i see and every whom i meet
i seem to like
But they poured here in those numbers
And drove up the price
So we had to move to the next town down
Where the school districts were shit
That’s how it happened
I wish it didn’t
But it did

Brilliant modern lament, well written and well played.

I like The nice percussive strum. You have some great lines in your well crafted lyrics. I especially liked “I got two good kids, and one good wife. “.
