Feb 2022 folk singer-songwriter ukulele fuc vintage indie-folk acoustic
DISCLAIMER: Yes, I absolutely realize this sounds very much like The Boxer, and it wasn't intentional...but it was just the one note melody that showed up with some chords and I didn't fight it as it rolled out.
This song is about that end of beginning of high school relationship that was the only heart I ever "broke". Hormones and summer vacations and one person being gone for a month don't really go so well for kids at that age. Here's how that went.
Friend of a friend
You were so easy just to talk to
At my second Cotillion
With my arms around your neck
And I was taller with heels on
But I sure liked your eyes
Coz they were honest
We went to see Godspell
At the episcopalian church
And there was wine at the reception
And we hit that table first
And no one knew it wasn’t grape juice
So we got tipsy in the back of my moms car
And she dropped you off
And all I knew was fumbling
For affection
But you were real life
Patient kind and true
Yea all I knew was distance
And rejection
But I saw my reflection
In you
My first lie to my mom
Was saying I was out to walk the dog
But I walked round the creek and met you
Halfway to your house
And when we got back she was home
As was the dog
And then I walked up with you
It was stupid but cute
And I remember how your mom
Was always sweet when I would call
And how your little brother
picked up and he really loved to talk
After we said goodbye we’d walk down to the creek
And wave across
I always wished
They’d build a bridge
And damn that summer air
And how you had to leave town
Because 4 weeks at 14
Was an eternity
And I was terrible at waiting Around
You came back and brought a gift
A turtle carved out of green stone
the paper said it meant “longevity”
And I freaked out because I didn’t know
What I wanted
So I called you on the phone and called it off
And broke your heart
They say you’ll always think about
The one that got away
And it’s true you show up in my
Dreams- even still today
Because I guess you changed the picture
Of the kind of love I thought that I could have
and I hope this song says thank you for that

yes, the harmonies work really well, as well as the straightforward story.
don’t know why but you had me at distance and rejection.
ah, the innocence of youth.. nostalgic

I love the double vocals on this one! The simplicity and directness of the lyrics are also beautiful - and the dog line got me to laugh. I love songs that paint vivid pictures and this one does indeed!!

I really enjoy this one! The lyrics are great! Agree with jessicamoon that "fumbling for affection" is inspired.

Such a beautiful song! I love the lyric “all I knew was fumbling for affection” - you really captured tender moments. I always love your voice and it pairs do well with uke. So good from beginning to end, nice storytelling!

This is great! I don't think it sounds too much like the Boxer. (It actually sounds a bit Josh Ritter to me -- in a good way). Really effective use of the one note as the frame you build around. That chorus is great (especially leading to its last line), and the specific details of the story that lead to the general lessons in the chorus. I'm so impressed with this one.

"It was stupid but cute"
Idk why but this line kind of broke me on this one. Might be my favorite song of yours I've heard so far.

Lovely. Your voice is beautiful, and the strumming is such an integral part of the tune. I'm always a sucker for double vocals (I can no longer record single vocals!). Great work!

I enjoyed this! As others have said, I wouldn't have thought about The Boxer if you hadn't mentioned it. Really nice story telling in this.

Nice write: the story is charming, as is the setting. The bridge is particularly strong here.

I don't think I'd have thought of The Boxer if you hadn't mentioned it... I love the way the story develops as the song goes on, and the ending with a "thank you" is nice.

The melody didn't particularly remind me of The Boxer, but your storytelling, world-building, and character development are easily on par with Paul Simon here. This is an incredible, poignant reminiscence of first love. Well done.

Jesus, this is great! I don't feel it's too like the boxer, and anyway the storytelling is so great. Collab?

Awesome story telling in your very well written lyrics. I was totally engaged the whole way through the song. Love the harmonies, your bridge, and the pacing of your lyrics in the verses - how they wrapped around. I really enjoyed your song. Very nice write.
