The Biblical story of Sampson is interesting. In one part of the story, Sampson slays an entire enemy army with the Jawbone of an ass. This song is one rather unorthodox and humorous (in an understated way) interpretation of that story. It was fun to write.
The Jawbone of an Ass
Ten thousand came against him. What was he to do?
Had no weapons with him. Needed some kind of a tool
He mucked round in the dirt at his feet. Felt something hard down there
Picked it up and what did he see. What kind of good could that be?
The Jawbone of an Ass. The Jawbone of an Ass
What in God’s name was Sam gonna do with the Jawbone of an Ass
Now Sam was a reasonable man. Never thought much about stuff
But now he was in trouble. It was time for him to get tough
Ten thousand were coming against him. What was he gonna do?
He had no weapons with him and needed some kind of a tool
All he had was that Jawbone! But, he was a wild ass of a man
So, he started running right towards them
Swinging that Jawbone as fast as he can
The Jawbone of an Ass. The Jawbone of an Ass
What in God’s name could he ever do with the Jawbone of an Ass
A Hurricane rose within him. Thunder and lightning crashed
That Jawbone was flashing from the left to the right
Everything it touched was smashed
When the dust had cleared and the storm had passed
Samson stood alone
Scattered around him all over the land
Ten thousand dead as a stone
The Jawbone of an Ass. The Jawbone of an Ass
What in God’s name had Samson done
With that Jawbone of an Ass
Samson looked down at the earth neath his feet
Then up at the sky above
Gave a great sigh and walked on home
Worshipped his God all alone
All he had to get the job done
Was the Jawbone of an Ass

A clever retelling of the Judges story!
