Inspired by a video of a grey male narwhal swimming with a pod of male beluga whales in the St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/group-belugas-may-have-adopted-young-narwhal-180970300/
In 2019 it was confirmed that a female narwhal and a male beluga produced a male Narluga (technically a Belwhal, but it had been called a Narluga long before DNA testing confirmed which species was the father). The skull is housed at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
Narluga Love c. 2/07/2022 Cecilia A. Eng
There once was a narwhal alone in the arctic
He’d wandered away from the rest of his pod
Lonely and missing the rest of his family
His future and prospects seemed seriously flawed
But he clung to the legend his elders had told them
Of beluga whale cousins who swam the warm bays
And the auntie who with her beluga whale lover
Raised narluga babies the rest of their days
The food in the deep grew much harder to find
As the water grew warmer off Canada’s coast
And as he grew weaker he swam towards the shallows
To beach and become just one more narwhal ghost
But as he despaired of his sad fate approaching
On the St. Lawrence River where sand meets the scree
His beluga whale cousins called to him with joy
And welcomed him home off Sept-Iles by the sea
They taught him to fish in the shallower waters
His brothers told him of beluga pod ways
Together they swim and cavort in the sunlight
And dream of beluga girl prospects some day
For many a year he’s been seen with belugas
Adopted by brothers both fearless and brave
With luck he may find his beluga whale lover
And we’ll see the narlugas cavort in the waves
We’ll see the narlugas cavort in the waves

Your voice is so rich! This is absolutely charming (and fascinating), and reminds me of a classic folk sing-a-long.

Awww, this is so sweet. "Narluga" is a great name for the hybrids. I want to hear this again live!

What an interesting story. Great idea for a song. The guitar feels like it is bobbing up and down, like gentle ocean waves. Well, it makes sense to me. Nice story telling
