I make my living everywhere
Working on the land
I'll take a job from any man
Anywhere I can
I have a decent pair of gloves
But a worn through pair of shoes
I only carry what I need
Or what I can stand to lose
I can clearly see what I'm supposed to be
The ring of the dinner bell
Reminds me of that prison cell
Except this time I'm free
I never had a family
Or a place to call my own
It doesn't matter anyway
I prefer to be alone
Soon I'll be off again
To another working town
They'll be looking for a man
They're always needing one around
I can clearly see what I'm supposed to be
The ring of the dinner bell
Reminds me of that prison cell
Except this time I'm free

Nice guitar playing there, and voice to match. Very good listen.

Great classic Americana song -- wonderfully done. Agree that the "ring of the prison cell" lyrics are a particular standout, but it's strong write all around with great storytelling. Can hear the resolve, and the note of contained regret in this narrator's voice.

Nice write: the determination carries through wonderfully. The contrast between gloves and shoes illustrates the narrator's character clearly.

"The ring of the dinner bell reminds me of that prison cell, except this time I'm free" is such a great lyric! This is a very evocative song.
