I took this for a walk and I'm happy with the melody. Probably have to come back to this one in March Album Editing Month. Further down the line, I can imagine arranging this one with a string section, but enough about production.
BOTH SIDES OF THAT COIN
by Greg Klyma
Last time we were face to face, I'd walked over just to say hello and, I dunno, maybe how ya doin'. You were quick to turn away. That was all you had to say and yeah, I guess I get it. Still, I hoped it might be different.
We'd caused each other so much pain
I have carried my share of the blame
You won't talk, you turn away
Breaks my heart to say
Both sides of that coin spend the same
I found a picture that you'd sent. It was an accident. I was cleaning out some things. Next thing I know, you're smiling at me. An invitation in your eyes took me back in time. No one before and no one since looks at me like you did.
It's a game no one can win
Getting lost in thoughts about what might have been
Hold the memory, say the name
Put the photograph away
Both sides of that coin spend the same
Last time we were face to face, I'd walked over just to say hello
Both sides of that coin spend the same

Lovely twist on the metaphor. Excellent harmonic lifts throughout.
Nice work, brother!

This came up in my random song search. Thank you Randomiser! Beautiful song and beautifully played.

I like the way your melody scans on this song with some internal rhymes and a flow that feels more like prose in places. Piano is perfect accompaniment too. Mixture of reflection and recognition with a sweet melancholy. Good work.
@tseaver Feb 2022
Nice write: ties the title phrase into all aspects of the "look back with regret" mood. Nice fit for a piano ballad, too.

Love these lyrics and how they scan with your melody! You are such a great songwriter!

That’s a great line and a great song to accompany it. Beautiful chord progression, the lot. Really stunning.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Very lovely. There are so many nice and sharp lyrics in this one, yet if feels so conversational.
And I'm the same as @jdschramm. I'm just down the road if you want backing vocals sometime

A couple months ago, I was hanging out with a friend. I forget the topic of conversation. Whatever I was commenting on, I said "both sides of that coin spend the same." Then I stopped, excused myself, and walked off to write that down. Feels like I finally found a home for it here. Psyched that you like the line!

This is wonderful, a real keeper! The musical setting for the lyric is perfect, and the whole thing sounds natural and powerful. 'both sides of the coin spend the same' is a nice payoff line. Nice piano playing, too!
@midwayfair Feb 2022
I love the prose verses, and the frequent "barely rhymes" in them.
@jdschramm Feb 2022
Let me know if come March/April you want some backing vox or more guitars on this :)
@williamjames Feb 2022
Very nice melody indeed and beautiful playing. The chorus with the lyrics and melody hits really hard. This will be a massive song with full production!
@jdschramm Feb 2022
Love how long the melody lines are, it's hard to write something stretched out over several chords. This reminds me a little of Paul Simon or CSN&Y, which are some of my favorites. Definitely want you to finish it out with a full recording! And the coin line is genius too.
