It was last Thursday we went to Ikea. Stuck in traffic, we listened to a CD. But it was his question near the end of the outing that prompted me to write this song.
1. Went to the store with my son,
got stuck is some traffic out on Autoroute 1.
Glance in the mirror, catch his face,
as the traffic advances at a snail's pace:
its our father and son Ikea run.
2. Car parked we skipped right inside,
the restaurant was closed, 'cause it was quarter past five.
Cinnamon roll for my guy,
then we're off to the races, and our feet fly:
its our father and son Ikea run.
3. Looking at life through his eyes,
he's crawling through cubbies that are made for his size.
Bound through the store, full of joy,
with his Papa who loves him, he's a big boy:
its our father and son Ikea run.
[bridge]
Weave our way through the labyrinth showroom floor,
he excitedly follows the arrows;
Check our list for the things we came shopping for,
then he eagerly scans all the bar codes.
4.Finally we're ready to go,
grab a couple of hot dogs and a cinnamon roll.
Loading the car, hear his voice,
"Daddy, was I a big help?" and I rejoice,
"Son, without your help I wouldn't be done,"
its our father and son Ikea run.

This is very sweet. My kids totally love going to IKEA too, and this song really shows how, for a kid, just “going on an errand” is a special event, giving them a chance to feel valued and helpful.
I was just about to write a song about the swearing and frustration I had last week putting together a series of EKET drawers!

Cute and detailed description of how you turned a normal shopping trip into a sweet memory with your son. :)

I love how bringing your son made a trip to IKEA such a joyful experience—it would be a giant playground in a kid’s view, instead of a sadistic maze .

This is exactly how IKEA feels. Although usually the parking spaces are as blocked as the ride there. ;-)
