This one is a about working for a living. It's a game for sure and if you give those companies everything they want, they will suck out your soul, So you learn from the old-timers that the trick is to only give em what they need.!!
The Gunfighter
by Gary Ray Knowland
I'm just an old gunfighter
carried on way past my prime.
waitin for the road to get lighter
But I'm startin to run out of time
money never made no difference
Never looked for glory or fame
But the time that I've lived makes no sense to me
I never understood the game
CHORUS
So yippee tiyi-yay get along old cowboy
The last of a dyin breed
I never gave em just what they wanted
But I gave em just what they need
Oh I didn't give em what they wanted
I gave em just what they need
BREAK
So I'll ride on, whether I'm right or wrong
The sun always sets In the West
The road that I chose to travel
Has taken all of my best
So think of me in the Evening,
When the shadows are gettin long.
There's nothin like a good country sunset
To make up for all of the wrong
CHORUS
So yippee tiyi-yay get along old cowboy
The last of a dying breed
I never gave em just what they wanted
But I gave em just what they need
I never gave em what they wanted
But I gave em just what they need
Oh, I gave em just what they need

@resonut123 Feb 2022
Cool loping along music and the vocal delivery reminds me of old John Prine or Dylan. Nice production. Nice country lead licks.
Thanks for giving us this!

Your performances have such a wonderful flow and the writing is so relatable by many. "I never gave em just what they wanted, but I gave em just what they need..." Wow!! What a contemplative write. Meditative visuals. A++ work!!

I'd be happy as a clam to have this pop up on Pandora. (I listen to that rather than Spotify, now that Joni and Neil Young have dumped them). I grew up watching all of the classic westerns. Even had a Dale Evans cap gun and hat. And I like country western and folk, so this really does it for me! Everything about it shouts radio ready to me!

Oh Hell Yeah! This is a damn near perfect classic country gem! It has everything! Mighty fine country instrumental base. With some awesome Grayland lead guitar to ice the F outta that delicious cake! The vocals are somewhere out beyond smoking with every word sung right on time with feeling and power! And those lyrics? We'll, those are just brilliant! A gunfighter is a great metaphor for, hmm, maybe a highly qualified IT guy who always kept things running smoothly? I just love, Love, LOVE that idea of never giving them what they wanted and instead giving them what they need!!!! Gary, this is such a damn fine song! It would fit on any top 10 radio station playlist from 50 years ago or 50 minutes ago! Great work my friend!

have to agree about the BANJO! It's so cool. It's a great, toe-tapping song with good harmony. I particularly liked these lines:
"But the time that I've lived makes no sense to me
I never understood the game'
yup.

This was a mood-lifter for sure. Very groovy song, with a lot of wisdom packed in seemingly light hearted words and melody. I'll try to remember this advice :D

Wow this song sounds radio ready! Great instrumental track, perfect vocals for your lyrics, and a universally relatable theme. Great steady beat and a toe tapper throughout.
