This song was inspired by words of the German mystic, Zen teacher and Benedictine monk Willigis Jäger, who said: “We are much more than we think we are, and we are something completely different than we think we are. We are merely the instrument on which an invisible and incomprehensible musician is playing.”
It is dedicated with love and gratitude to all patients in palliative care and all doctors, nurses and therapists working in this field, in particular at the palliative care unit of Hospital St. Josef in Schweinfurt, Germany, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
There‘s still so much to be done – we need more hospices, everywhere. May every human being have hands to hold in their final hour!
Schmerz, der alles übertönt,
Kräfte, die dir schwinden,
Trauer, die den Atem raubt,
Ängste, die dich binden -
zeig alles her, zeig dein Gesicht,
zeig deine Wunden,
fürchte dich nicht,
ich bin da für dich.
Lass dich fallen, ich fang dich auf,
lass dich einfach tragen.
Quälen dich Stimmen der Verzweiflung,
glaub nicht, was sie sagen.
Lass alles los, vertrau dich an,
unendlich daheim
in der Liebe, der Ewigkeit.
Nun kann ich dich nicht mehr sehen,
doch ich darf erahnen,
dass du neuen Wegen folgst,
neuen Lebensbahnen.
Ich glaub an unser Wiedersehen,
ich glaub daran,
dass wir irgendwann
das Geheimnis ganz verstehen.
Wir sind beide viel mehr,
als wir meinen zu sein.
Tropfen im Meer,
Spuren im Sand.
Wir sind niemals allein.
Wir sind alle viel mehr,
als wir meinen zu sein.
Tropfen im Meer,
Spuren im Sand.
Wir sind niemals allein.

Pain that drowns out everything,
strength that fades,
grief that takes your breath away,
fears that bind you -
show everything, show your face,
show your wounds, don't be afraid,
I am here for you.
Let yourself fall, I'll catch you,
just let me carry you.
When voices of despair torment you,
don't believe what they say.
Let go of everything, entrust yourself,
trust in the power
that can redeem and hold you every day.
We are both much more
than we think we are.
Drops in the sea, traces in the sand.
We are never alone ...
When your life fades away
it is not the end.
I'll stay with you until the end,
holding your hands.
Then you are free from space and time,
returned,
infinitely at home in love, in eternity.
Now I can no longer see you,
but I may sense
that you are following new paths,
new tracks of life.
I believe that we shall meet again,
I believe that someday
we will fully understand the mystery.
We are both much more
than we think we are.
Drops in the sea, traces in the sand.
We are never alone.
We are all much more
than we think we are.
Drops in the sea, traces in the sand.
We are never alone.

A gorgeous tribute to palliative care workers and family caregivers too.

Das ist wunderschön.
I was hooked from the first guitar strums. And then your voice is so reassuring and intimate. I love how this song works on so many levels, it feels like the small voice of god, like a lullaby to a child, a release to someone who is dying, a song of joyful grief, and a love song to the whole world, one person at a time.
It has that intimacy that Martin Buber writes about in Ich und Du.
Vielen, vielen Dank!

So beautiful, soulful and real. Your music and vocal are so emotive, this is so touching and needs to be said and again, you are a brave heart to put it out there.

Eine angemessene Hymne für die gute Einrichtung! Und mal wieder betörend gesungen. Du trägst es dort doch vor am Jubiläumstag?!
@wurzelfrau Feb 2022
Das ist wunderschön, Karan.

Ein wunderschönes Lied über etwas, was tief in uns drin wohnt, trotz allen Enttäuschungen, aller Verzweiflungen. Schön, daran glauben zu können.

Wow, I just love your focus and inspiration. It makes this even more meaningful! Beautiful melody and guitar, which become one with your words. Really nice to hear your music. Beautiful!

As always, Karan, so beautiful and reflective of your pure and gentle soul. This is the first song in this year's FAWM to almost bring me to tears.
