Feb 2022 piano-pop masochism blame-loop
It's easy to get stuck in the loop of blaming yourself for passing on opportunities you later wish you'd taken, or to keep reliving that time you hurt someone, or to hold on to rage because someone violated your boundaries. When you're in it, it can be hard to get out.
If I'm honest there are phases
where I'm eaten up
Like a gibbous moon
pissed off that it's time is up
If I'm honest there are memories
that I wanna burn
in a sadist fire
line them up to wait their turn
Don't want tomorrow to be the same
Pricking my skin with these pins of blame
I've been worried there are places
(bruises in my mind)
like the ice you see
just above the water line
I've been worried my defenses
(symptoms of the cause)
keep me swimming on
in this anger just because
Don't want tomorrow to be the same
Pricking my skin with these pins of blame
Tomorrow doesn't have to be the same
Pricking my skin with these pins of blame
Stuck in the loop
It's easy to get stuck in the loop
Stuck in the loop
It's easy to get stuck in the loop
If only I could go back
take back hit back lay back
hold back fade back step back
play that back again
If only I could go back
take back hit back lay back
hold back fade back step back
play that back again
play that back again
play that back again
play that back again
Stuck in the loop
It's easy to get stuck in the loop

What fabulous lyrics. I can totally relate to them. Why do we do that to ourselves, anyway? What a compelling melody this is, with your word painting choices making it feel like a record skipping at times - the perfect portrayal of that loop we get stuck in. And once again, this is beautifully performed. I love everything about this song.

Wow, your voice works so beautifully over this piano bed. The harmonies fit so nicely - just a touch here and there, like perfect seasoning. Also really dig the vocal effect treatment on "stuck in a loop" - the sounds fit together so well, sounding rich and full while still only being a handful of tracks. Well done, Leslie!

This is such a powerful take on mental health and the loops we can get stuck in. The build in particular with your lyrics and harmonies and layers all coming together just... your music is, as always, tremendous.
@wurzelfrau Feb 2022
you are so excellent with harmonies. This was delicious!
@metricula Feb 2022
I love how the physicality of the song mirrors the meaning

Relatable and SUCH a great mix! As always, love the harmonies and layers you've got going on here. This is really gorgeous!
@ryuu Feb 2022
Such a big mood! I love the insistent "again".

The rhythm of the "stuck in the loop" section is so cool ... gives voice to that uncomfortable experience while being musically enjoyable. Really vivid imagery and great sounds all around.

There's so much to like about this song! As the second voice comes on strong from the 'stuck in a loop', it really hits the spot.
@dasbinky Feb 2022
Love the power you get here with just the piano and vocal. Awesome tune!
@rwhosings Feb 2022
Hard relate.
Love the musical treatment you gave this. The harmonies are the perfect exclamation.
"Pricking my skin with pins of blame."
Also love the vocal sounds you managed for the 'stuck in the loop' 'play that back' sections.

I'm so glad I discovered this! Voice and instrument are terrific, there's restatement, there's development. I'm so impressed with the lead in to the bridge part from stuck in the loop on through the play back again's.
Don't know what you have envisioned as next steps for this if any but my inclination is to say don't change a thing!
That said, putting an electric bass under a woman+piano can magnify the magic, sometimes to a surprising extent. Maybe a fretless? Or a synth that sounds like one?
