this is one from the archive I never thought I'd end up finishing, I spent SO MUCH TIME on that snare. still not entirely happy with it. Any and all mix/arrangement critiques welcome
I was going for an arena-rock ballad sound and I feel like I missed it by a wide margin but this still sounds cool! ended up adding the bass harmonics, although I'm not sure they don't feel out of place on the verse (the note choices I mean, it feels a bit random still.)
Jeremy, if you see this I hope you're well.
there's something that i missed about ya
and I can't put my finger on it
something bout the comfortable silence
that I know we can share
but it's in the air
this unspoken question
i hoped you'd let it go
I want you to know
I'm not the one,
I never was
still wanna talk
simply because
you're still my friend,
I wanna be yours
can't we be cool
and laugh like before?
(and laugh like before)
there's something that I missed about ya
familiar like old friends ought to
running into memories of your place back east,
smoking on the rooftop was a sweet release
but it's in the air
this unspoken question
I hoped you'd let it go
I want you to know
I'm not the one,
I never was
still wanna talk
simply because
you're still my friend,
I wanna be yours
can't we be cool
and laugh like before?
I'm not the one,
I never was
still wanna talk
simply because
you're still my friend,
I wanna be yours
can't we be cool
and laugh like before?

The bass harmonics are just fine. Please don't lose the bass harmonics. I'm quickly developing a bit of a crush on your bass playing.
I sort of see what you mean with the snare - I'm struggling to articulate why though. It sort of crackles where it should smack. But the gated reverb, which is the main thing, is all present and correct and doing what it should be doing. And it's a pretty minor thing in the context of such an enormously impressive song :)

Wow, Ricki Lee jones eat your heart out :)
Cracking arrangement, lyric sentiment and delivery. Quality!
@dragondreams Feb 2022
Just heard this on the FAWMtalk show. It is glorious. Instant watchlist. :-)
@nadine Feb 2022
This voice. And this bass. Are these flageoletts on a bass?!?! I never heard something like this before. What a great arrangement.
@metalfoot Feb 2022
What a GREAT song. Wow.
@abudabard12514 Feb 2022
I think I said "Damn it Jeremy, let it go, man. Get your shit together" out loud about 9 times during this tune. Also I think the Bass harmonics work real fine in that verse.
@andrewrusse Feb 2022
Oh crumbs. Wow. I love this one too. Now I know what a watchlist is for! Love your voice, the bass, the production... and the song itself... amazing lyrics.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Wow! Beautiful vocals! I really like the arrangements also. Great harmonies. Yes, @headfirstonly I'm watchlisting now!
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Amazing performance! I love the mix too, the bass harmonics are such a cool touch and that snare is so nice and crunchy.
@theawkwardsleep Feb 2022
I love the way you've mixed this. I quite like a sparse arrangment, its leaves so much room when the melody and vocals are amazing (as yours are) If it was me, I'd add a bit of delay on those oohs a bit at 1:15 and let them ring out a bit, but that's me (I love me some delays - you can tell in everything i mix haha) This is fantastic. Another great one.
@headfirstonly Feb 2022
This is your third FAWM? I've been missing out. Watchlisted.
Gorgeous vocals, and a brave use of silence in the intro. Makes it all the more powerful.
@ineloquentsd Feb 2022
Oh this is gorgeous. It feels vaguely reminiscent of Halsey crossed with Mariah Carey. The subject is relatable, the lyrics feel grounded and heartfelt, and the vocal performance is just INCREDIBLE.
The mix with the harmonies really supports your lead vocals. I love the way you used the bass - enough to add flavor without being overwhelming, especially paired with the claps keeping the beat and the little piano melody.
I don’t know if it’s exactly what you were going for, but it is damn good.
@tabitha Feb 2022
Oooh, the production on this immediately stood out and the way you add in harmonies is awesome.
I was thinking recently about the idea of comfortable silences and how great it is to be in a room with someone and not feel anything has to be said.
@shortdan Feb 2022
Stunning vocal work again. The soulful / jazzy melody is massively my kind of thing I have to say. The bass line is super cool too. This is really great stuff :)
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
Nice groove on the bassline and your vocals are stunning. I love that grit that comes into your voice when you sing "air." The subtle strings in the background are a nice addition. They almost sound like a mellotron at times.
@jdschramm Feb 2022
That snare is great. I like the unstructured feeling of the song and how it comes together when the snare starts. You vocals and production sounds great. That bass is amazing too.
@adforperu Feb 2022
Gorgeous; poppy at it's core, but so jazzy on the edges. That ascending vocal into the "I'm not the one" is insane. You really know your way around a melody, great stuff. Also, for such a virtuoso bassist, it's good that you know when to hold back.
@fonte Feb 2022
Wow. This is amazing. Fantastic voice. Really love the melody. Lyrics kinda hit me too. Pretty poignant. Like some of the rhythm of the verses too. I had lots of production ideas floating around when I was listening but really like what you’ve done here.
@blainev83 Feb 2022
Fantastic vocal! Just...wow! Loved this. Watchlisted!
@cts Feb 2022
I had a cathartic moment while listening. I was reminded of a relationship similar to narrative you have. Your arrangement is incredible and I was listening intently at what you have done. Glad you had to finally finish it. Though this hints at early Lorde moments (sparse arrangement and vocal movement) this is totally all you. Wonderful. I'm going to be listening again.
