Song No. 3 for FAWM 2022, this one took a lot longer than the previous two, you will hear why when you listen.
It's a song about, well, Syria has been in the news, and I constantly feel sad about what goes on in the Middle East, but life goes on there even though nothing changes and we have just become so immune to the horrors. So it's about how we choose not to see anymore because there is nothing anyone can or will do to change the situation.
Dust in my Eyes – © Paul Cogley Feb 2022
Verse
Beneath a torn and broken sky
Children on the street
No shoes upon their feet
Some older brothers gone away
Families torn apart
For who knows exactly why?
There’s a sadness in this world
Distraction and false hope
Sometimes we look away
What’s the cost of human life?
What’s the meaning of it all?
Seems there’s dust in my eyes
Chorus
Prefer to be hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.
The purpose of human life is to love all that which surrounds you.
If you could live forever, tell me what you’ll be living for?
Where there’s love, there is life.
Where there’s life, there is love!
Verse
This world’s another’s hell.
There is darkness,
But don’t forget the light
What’s the cost of broken dreams?
when in the end
Someone takes it all away
Who should we pretend to be,
Just remember to care
About whom we pretend to be.
What’s the cost of human life?
Put the thought away,
It’s just the dust in my eyes.
Chorus

This one got me from the start. It goes deep. The contrast between your voice and all the different textures and layers of sound is perfect. Brilliant work.

Woo, good choice to have the extended intro, it really breathes. I always fear losing listener interest but you are right to trust in that opening, it's lovely, great guitar. Also good choice for such a restrained chorus - it's perfect. The words are nice too. The meditative feel is consistent across music and lyrics. That occasional "bwoop!" of guitar lead is great - what does that remind me of - the Travelling Wilburies or something? Such a great understated little touch. Really lovely overall.

Powerful writing, and a big production number as the delivery package. I can hear a lot of your influences coming through here, Paul, particularly in that fine lead guitar! And that massive bass synth is really rather satisfying...
"Prefer to be hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie" gets to the heart of it for me. Nobody likes admitting they're wrong, or made a mistake and these days most of Western political dialogue revolves around the idea of always being right. We need to make room for doubt in our lives.

Heavy lyrics. I feel a bit like I'm listening to David Bowie with the outer-spacke kind of vibe I get from not non-vocal music. Great job!
