Feb 2022 folk girl-with-guitar
Marking this as NSFW as there is one little swear in there.
This was maybe a way of exorcising a little negative self talk? Some of these things have been yelled in my face over the years and they've stuck in my head. Also I am just no guitar soloist so if anyone else wants to play with this I'm happy to provide a file without the solo.
Everything you've done
And everything you say
Is kinda full of shit and that's OK
You're mean to all your friends
Everyone pretends
But you're too dumb to notice anyway
It's not that I hate you
You're under my skin
But you push away everyone you know
It's not that I hate you
But I know where you've been
And I really think you're better off alone
I know your hopes and dreams
Your petty little schemes
The things you say when no one else can hear
We know not to rely
On your distracted eye
Watching for a chance to disappear
It's not that I hate you
You're under my skin
But you push away everyone you know
It's not that I hate you
But I know where you've been
And I really think you're better off alone
It's not that I hate you
You're under my skin
It's not that I hate you
But I know where you've been
As you crawl off to bed
The voices in your head
Are only saying what you've always known
You can't escape what's true
I'm glad I'm me, not you
It's harsh to say, but call me when you've grown
It's not that I hate you
You're under my skin
But you push away everyone you know
It's not that I hate you
But I know where you've been
And I really think you're better off alone

What a tremendous break from the sappy love songs on radio! And who could resist that title? “Call me when you’ve grown” is an insult to remember.

Reminiscent of the concept 'You and Your Band' by Kate Rhudy which I've always been very fond of, but the switch-up of this being turned on oneself sets it apart pretty drastically.
"You're mean to all your friends
Everyone pretends
But you're too dumb to notice anyway"
This is cutting to say about someone else but when turned inward it feels like pretty classic self doubt. You only notice the parts of you that stand out as negative because being positive feels expected. Really well executed concept.

Dang. This is someone the protagonist knows really well. And thinks they'd be better off alone.
The title made me want to hear this!
No, I don't hate you. I know you pretty well, and I think you're pretty much not a nice person. Who should leave everybody alone.
I like "Call me when you've grown".

Such a happy little tune for such a dark topic. I have a person that’s coming to mind as I listen. Wonderful harmony. I enjoyed the multiple layers of vocal.

This is such a witty song, and the harmonies are delightful! I love the sassy edge to the lyrics: "But I know where you've been/And I really think you're better off alone." I'll be singing this the rest of the evening!
