i wanted to post a couple more rockin' tunes before i posted a mellow acoustic jam, but here we are.
this is an idea i started working on a little while back but couldn't finish. today i sat down and figured out some kind of structure and finished the lyrics.
i saw there was a capo challenge in the forum here, so this tune uses the capo on the fifth fret. i'm strumming G D E minor and C shapes.
i am singing and playing acoustic guitar on this and i added a little harmony in the background.
there’s just something about
when you put an acoustic guitar
in the hands of a narcissist
they start to insist
that you listen to their
deepest and darkest thoughts
and their lyrics are always really bad poetry
your cliche's
cold as ice
that simile did not cut like a knife
i’m down on my knees
begging you please
can use a thesaurus next time?
remember that not every lyric needs to rhyme
there’s a guy
at every party
holding an acoustic guitar
and he’s just waiting for someone to shout
“hey you should play wonderwall”
then he does
as a goof
and a little later on
he will play freebird too
it’s ok
it’s alright
he’s got nowhere to go
he can do this all night because
his other friends already hate him

Great song and spot on. Nice tune and great lyrics.
This was always the thing that drove me bonkers at parties. Just cause you can play and sing, doesn’t mean you have to.
@deena Feb 2022
You nailed it! Even so, you should play this at the next open mic!

This made me smile more than once. Another really good song. I loved the world-weariness of the delivery, after hearing your previous high energy songs. Seems appropriate somehow. I do have to take issue with one thing: lyrics *must* rhyme, it is the law.

Given the rhymes in the previous lines, I was expecting "deepest and darkest ----," so then it's funny that you literally sing in the next verse that not every line has to rhyme. This is in the style of a song that one of those acoustic hunks would play... Overall, the continued meta-meta-ness is disorienting!

Is this song about me? Also, what's a synonym for thesaurus. I did appreciate how you called out all the tropes but made it seem very fresh. Great storytelling and characterization throughout. You won at using a capo and won at writing a song!

Nice playing and singing.

Super cool, love the (doubled?) vocals, and the story rings close to heart!
Also, is “remember that not every lyric needs to rhyme” the only line that rhymes? ;)
@kaminokai Feb 2022
Awesome! I feel like I 'm that guy on Digital Slumber party, because you guys are always asking me to play Wonderwall! Also, this reminds me of college and playing the Co-ops and pubs.

Love this immediately. Anti folk is my jam and this is exactly that. Conversational lyrical flow, the rhyme scheme is loose and effortless, i *know* this guy (you paint him perfectly), and there’s equal measures of bite and apathy. Love the harmonies too, solid song

Shhhh, you shouldn't let them know Anthony. Had a good laugh with this one, thanks!

Those lyrics made me smile...narcissism is a real thing and I guess they like the attention. I love that you added harmonies! Well done!
