Second day of Covid isolation. Wrote and recorded this this afternoon. This is a demo with just an acoustic guitar and voice, but I imagine it as a punky, in-your-face thing. I guess I need to start a band...
Last year we were in the park
Drinking warm beer watching it get dark
Now they call us up to carry the coffins
"Hey baby, do you come here often?"
Who told Tina, "It gets better"?
Now she's writing obits for the town newsletter
Hasn't had a day off in a month of Sundays
All she ever says is, "Maybe one day."
We were eighteen in another time
I remember her hand in mine
Getting together to laugh at the fakers
Next thing you know we're undertakers
Whatever happened to my misspent youth
Tell me lies if this is the truth
I never thought I would spend my nights
Dancing to the rhythm of the last rites
Now we're made flesh in a land of bones
Building our lives among tombstones
They don't like to mention it often
But they need young shoulders to carry the coffins.
I remember Mikey dancing the conga
Now he's at her bedside saying "Hold on a little longer."
And if you ask me,
It's much too much for twenty-three.
Eighteen and done with school
Seeing our future in the swimming pool
Big plans, getting bigger,
Now you're a mourner and I'm a grave-digger.
We're getting familiar with the drum and the fife
Learning what happens at the end of a life
Hide my hopes behind a veil
Watch my dreams as they set sail.
Whatever happened to my misspent youth
Tell me lies if this is the truth
I never thought I would spend my nights
Dancing to the rhythm of the last rites
Now we're made flesh in a land of bones
Building our lives among tombstones
They don't like to mention it often
But they need young shoulders to carry the coffins.
They don't like to mention it often
But they need young shoulders to carry the coffins.

Once again, what a set of lyrics! You're really on fawm (sorry ). But really, such an amazing song, too many great couplets to pick one over another, and I like the cool, folk punk approach.

I actually dig this folk-punk approach. The lyrics are awesome. Very visual, they tell story in a captivating way. Really good work.

Yes, this definately has a punk vibe. The lyrics are a very interesting read. Dark and sharp.

Such a sharp lyric, dark themes but told with wit and a light touch. The way they flow rhythmically is really impressive!

This is awesome!! Can definitely imagine it as a punky, in your face song but also works well as an acoustic song. Really poignant and powerful lyrics and a catchy melody. The vocal harmonies on the chorus work so well

I really like the chord progression and the melody it felt instantly catchy
