a stray dog in the doorway
i climb the broken stairs
calling her name in the darkness
but nobody is left in there
sailors in the street below
a broken window pane
a siren that is silent now
a broken water main
many nights at this address
i combed her flame-red hair
though i cannot find her now
i see red shadows everywhere
a bomb makes no distinction
between the city and the shore
tonight ill go back to my ship
and see my love no more
my love was false, my love was true
ill never see her no more
its off to another battlefield
in the same old stinking war.

I just love how you have used your voice in this one. Loads of soul and feeling. It captured the mood so well and sounds so personal. I really love how the story and melody work together with the piano. Well done!

This is incredible! I read the words first, and they fit the sailor-off-to-war classic ballad style, to be played as a folk song.
Then what you did is so soulful and personal and unique. Each verse is its own story, its own chapter, its own photo.

The intro is awesome... Skilfully crafted words and beautifully brought to life. Enjoyed your vocal delivery very much!

Wow. The intensity of this song is something else. Staggering, really.

Another great story Mr. White....but I think Mr. Emotion is also a fitting handle. Cheers

This is a BW classic. Perfect synthesis of those lyrics, the sparse piano accompaniment and that gravelly, whiskey soaked voice.
A whole novel in five verses! Chapeau!

Yup my fav of yours so far. Great lyric, great emotion and it all comes together very beautifully.

I missed your voice mate. Great intro, lovely soft piano. Great lyrics.

the lo-fi recording works great for this song. plaintive and aching, i like how the vocals are understated but then burst to life with feeling at certain points

Wow Bill! This is one of my favorites! Somehow your vocals sound empty, but emotional too. How'd you do that? Top notch stuff!

There's something about that piano tone that takes me back to a Baptist church way out in some dying town in New Mexico.
This is really moving stuff. I think it might make me cry even if I didn't speak English. I love how you've stripped down the music to the bone, so nothing inessential gets between the listener and the feelings you convey. Damn, those last two verses are pretty devastating
