Second song on the board! A guitar riff I was messing around with in January, now turned into a full song (I have a voice memo of it that I could have included again, but you guys have heard that trick already, right?)
Couple of things on this one I feel like I should probably change if I'm ever gonna do anything with it, but... I probably won't. I've done the confident / confidante thing before (like two years ago, and during FAWM) so if you remember that... sorry, I am an old dog.
If I was in your shoes I think I’d call me back
even if it’s just to let me know I’m not on the right track
I guess time is on my side, as long as you’re withholding
but the devil made these idle hands ideal for doomscrolling
as every minute passes
I feel ready to burst
convince myself
that things are bad
and they are getting worse
with every passing second
I inflate myself with doubt
if you need a confidante
you’ll have to count me out
I need something to defuse the situation
I know not every bruise is gonna mean an amputation
scanning through these strangers isn’t gonna help my health
but the devil made these idle hands so I could punch myself
@fourzeroes Mar 2022
I really like this. Nothing else to say about it. Good work Vorton
@balancelost Mar 2022
Very enjoyable romp through 80s REM style indie janglism. Classic Vom-esque character study replete with the necessary amount of self-deprecation
@mosley Feb 2022
I totally dig this! Jangly in the best way, and always cool. Just the right kind of catchy
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
There's something really nicely Marrish about guitar on this, but way more cheerful. Really like it. And the lyrics (hey it doesn't matter if you recycle a bit) have an excellent droll self-deprecation that chimes quite strongly. And I really really like the big chant of the outro lines. Keep this around. Could be a live favourite?
@amusia Feb 2022
Love all the jangly guitar! Very fun vibe overall. In fact, it's probably the perfect song to get out of an overthinking mindset like what's described in the lyrics.
@rayboneor Feb 2022
This crossed my FB feed this morning. I still love it. It seems you're working in a lower register than you usually do, which gives it, I don't know, a more fragile quality somehow, like when Johnny Cash sings Hurt. Bvox are great here, too
@splittybooms Feb 2022
Liking the fuzzy fx on the vox and snare against the airy guitar.
The kind of breezy music behind these anxiety-filled lyrics is a cool direction; love that kind of thing when the lyrics are relatable.
Nice vocals here, too! Great indie voice.
Really liking the little slices of synth you slip in here and there among the already great sounding guitar; adds a great flavor.
As a listener, this sounds finished and ready for playlists.
@mikedebenham Feb 2022
Ah, I needed a bit of jangle, many thanks. Sounds great, catchy as heck, and some killer lines: 'not every bruise is gonna mean an amputation' - nice.
@miltz Feb 2022
You've really got a knack for hooks. This bounces, it jangles, it does a lot. I quite like "idle hands ideal".
@guatecoop Feb 2022
This is a great riff to start out with and it just develops into a well-rounded and rich song. The melody just seems automatic for this music, as does the structure--really natural and organic. I love these words! So many great parts that sound like different mantras from our ancestors or something. Great song!
@hbusse Feb 2022
So much jangly retro goodness, love this soundscape. Group vocals in the final section are hitting the spot!
@arthurrossi Feb 2022
What a lovely pop-song with such a catchy tune! Lovely words, so perfectly put to music. I love the line "but the devil made these idle hands so I could punch myself". Great chorus and vocal delivery! Excellent work!
@frey Feb 2022
this is so so catchy and I love the dream pop vibes, your vocals are really lovely!!
@seemanski Feb 2022
What a tune! Catchy, well paced, loved the synths and now I know I can't rely on you as a confidante. Good stuff.
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
I do remember the confidante song and liking it. But i like this so what’s the problem? Maybe you’re just a con- artist now.
This is a cracking pop song with some excellent, witty lines. The melody is just lovely. When the backing vocals come in the whole thing just lifts in such a sweet way.
@johnfahres Feb 2022
This had a real Robyn Hitchcock vibe to my ear. Loving it. I dig the jangly-pop sound. Keyboard was a wee bit heavy in the mix in the second verse, but otherwise I really enjoyed this start to finish.
@zecoop Feb 2022
So happy, joyous, uplifting except when it isn’t… which is the whole song, but it’s perfect for dancing. Love the jangle blended with the lovely keys and that bouncing drum track propels it toward the doom that is obviously waiting around the corner.
@debrandio Feb 2022
Vom, you ain't right, but so right.
Your humor,clever righteousness.
Hooks abound!!
You Rock!
@sorby69 Feb 2022
Indie-pop perfection Vom! Love everything about out it. Thanks for making it downloadable; it's going to get played in my house a lot.
@jimdgreen Feb 2022
love this, your rapidly becoming my favour FARMer
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
This seems to have a bit of a 70s AM radio feel to me. Love the jangly guitar and subtle synth. And man, oh man, that chorus is catchy as anything.
If there were any justice in the world, this would be on the BBC 6 Music playlist.
@kanttila Feb 2022
Really great jangle riff, sounds awesome and works perfect in this upbeat driving tune. Great beat and melody. The keyboard that comes bursting out in the second verse is awesome. Well done!
@owl Feb 2022
World class jangle! Really love the lyrics here, they’re so dense and playful (the bruise/amputation lines! <3) This is such catchy good fun musically as well, love the little guitar leads and that cool old synth coming in on the second verse.
@shortdan Feb 2022
Ooh, I made the mistake of reading Ad's comment first. +1 for the IRS era REM comparison - I totally hear that too! Really enjoyed this one - so many elements to pick out for praise - the bass work particularly caught my ear along with the high guitar riffs (that combo being the main driver of the earlier comparison I guess). Excellent work again!
@adforperu Feb 2022
Going to throw that 'songwriting' compliment straight back at you for this one. Such a great mix and arrangement, the picked parts and the strummed parts is such a simple way to create two different dynamics. The chorus is such an earworm, and it all culminates in that layered vocal bit towards the end, HERE COMES A COMPARISON; IRS-era REM. Hmm, that sentence looks weird... I meant Internal Revenue Service-era Rapid Eye Movement.
@judypie Feb 2022
This. Is a foot tapper and a half! It’s going ten a penny!! Sounds awesome dude, bonafide pop hit!
@thelowestbitter Feb 2022
I do remember confident/confidante, but this is excellent recycling. Love the chiptuney synth under the chorus, and that intro/post-chorus guitar line is great. Really like "the devil made these idle hands ideal for doomscrolling"
@karlsburg25 Feb 2022
mate this is excellent. I'd love to see you playing those guitars. So much intricacy going on then there. Really well crafted lyrics to go with the gorgeous melodies going on here. And i love chorus build to the last two lines. Top work once more dude
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
Lovely jangly guitar parts! I'm a bit fan of the jangle. Lyrically very, very good and the whole things is so well-realised. The outro vocal harmonies are perfect!
@musuko Feb 2022
Man this is so excellently put together. Love the guitars, and it is so lyrically clever and on point! Build to the end is wonderfully satisfying as well!
@circle Feb 2022
I often say something like "this reminds me of x" in FAWM comments, but I think it's a first that it reminds me of... myself! but better. Really great track, love the rhythm section and the guitars are beautifully jangly and mixed superbly. The way you matched the chorus vocal rhythm with the drums and bass is great, and exactly the sort of thing I'm too lazy or stupid (or both) to do. The extra synths in the climactic bits are brilliant too
@rayboneor Feb 2022
That sweetly chiming guitar is great with the low vocal. The opening lines had me chuckling ruefully. I'm a pretty big fan of all things VV, but this one really hits a resonant spot in my heart, the prefect blend of jaunty and sad...and it's just lovely with the harmonies and such
@crisp1 Feb 2022
Super catchy and fun to listen to with great lyrics -- some really clever lines, especially in the last verse.
@paulh1237 Feb 2022
Love the group backing vocals on the chorus bit and the chord change to go into it. Also, I'm not sure I've heard the phrase 'doom scrolling' before, and I approve. I did mishear the last line as 'the devil made these idle hands so I could touch myself', which would have changed the tone somewhat. Love the jangly guitars!
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
The synthy/moog thing is a great texture when it comes in! Great lyrics, but overall favorite line: "I know not every bruise is gonna mean an amputation"
@w1n Feb 2022
Love it , I’m a sucker for catchy and jangly indie pop just like this. Like the slight dissonance between the happy lightness of music and the darker theme of the lyrics.
@disarming Feb 2022
What a great song. Love the tone of that guitar. Great lyrics.
Sounds like it be part of a movie soundtrack. It paints a whole scene
