I was starting to write this song when the previous song (Never Enough) forced its way into mind and I had to finish it first before continuing work on this one.
And this lyric was certainly a discovery (which I love) - all I had was the idea of how cold it is right now in Michigan and how recent Groundhog Day was. The Muse took it from there.
Another FAWM complete, and I'm pleased with the lyrics this year. I hope to record some demos before the month is out so you don't have to imagine what I was hearing in my head. :)
February freeze is in full motion
The whistle pig looked straight into the sun
While we were looking down at the obstruction
He dared to run…
But he didn’t get far - he’s not that fast
Some traditions weren’t meant to last
If you had to ask me God’s own truth
You know I’d shoot it back to you
I may have bought it, but I never got it.
Jesus Christ, America, and gunshots
Ringing out a rhythm ‘round the earth
Dancing to avoid the nickel sunspots
And the dirt
But we didn’t get far - we’re not that fast
Some traditions weren’t meant to last
If you had to ask me God’s own truth
You know I’d shoot it back to you
I may have bought it, but I never got it.
Justice that trickles down like pant stains
Servants with pockets full of gold
Profits over peace, towers and airplanes -
It’s long past old
No we didn’t get far - we’re not that wise
Some traditions were a sneaky disguise
If you had to ask me God’s own truth
You know I’d shoot it back to you
I may have bought it, but I never got it.
Why is it that simple questions always are the hardest to ask?
Why is it that simple people always trust the man in the mask?
Why is it that simple truths always are the hardest to apply?
Why is it that simple grace and mercy receive no reply? Why?
No we didn’t get far - we’re not that good
Some traditions were a lie misunderstood
If you had to ask me God’s own truth
You know I’d shoot it back to you
I may have bought it, but I never got it.
I may have bought it, but I never got it.
I may have bought it…
