Sometimes life and doctors interfere with happiness
Round Like Grandma c. 2/03/2022 Cecilia A. Eng
C D7 G
CHORUS
I always wanted to be round like grandma
Who ruled from her overstuffed chair
Surrounded by cookies and ginger
Our unquestioned matriarch rare
I would never obsess about weight I swore
‘Cause I wanted to grow round like her
Round like grandma
But one day when I was in my thirties
They said my blood sugar was high
It threatened my kidneys and eyesight
And they said that I could even die
They said I’d have to change my diet
Limit sugars and carbs was their advice
It wasn’t the candy and sweets I missed,
But the bread and the noodles and rice*
CHORUS
They told us belly fat was a new peril
That shortened your time on life’s stage
But the insulin traps any fat in my middle
Goodbye to a happy middle age
So I walked 2 miles in the mornings
(By smaller) portions and low cal I was bound
I practiced tai chi on the weekends
(Yet each) year I grew increasingly round *
CHORUS
So I try to do what I’m supposed to
And follow the doctor’s advice
Take the meds and insulin injections
And the fingersticks that aren’t very nice
Still I miss that dream as a child
To gracefully grow old and round
As my happy flight of fancy
Spirals into the ground *
CHORUS

My grandmother was five foot nothin' wore a flowered hat, and drove a 76 Nova. A frightening scene, a flowered hat driving a giant land-yacht down the road.

@humantornado - You're right about the length. I edited the chorus down and deleted a verse and have recorded the demo again...

Nature is so dumb, making us like foods that aren't very good for us.

Your voice is really lovely and the way you sing the title line is so sweet and innocent. I can hear a smile in your voice. It's such a bummer when food becomes a source of anxiety and danger rather than enjoyment. This is a story I imagine a lot of people can relate to.

This has a real old folksy feel to it. Well done! If I could criticize anything, it'd be that this is a really long song for what it is. Fun though.
