Feb 2022 spiritual alt-rock indie-rock oraclechallenge
The card that was drawn for me in the Oracle challenge was "The child." I don't have kids, I have dogs, which are kind of like kids but furrier and they poop outside. I really appreciate how in-the-moment they are, and they remind me not to take myself so seriously. You can read more about the card here: https://www.colettebaronreid.com/oracle/the-child-2/
Anyway, I wasn't planning on writing today and this just hit me. It's really more of a prayer than anything.
As always, production feedback welcome! Always trying to learn and improve.
O savior, o savior be mine
O river of stars in the sky
Give way to a neon sunrise
And open my eyes
O heaven, o heaven above
O devil in the shape of a dove
Give me the gold I'm dreaming of
It's never enough
And I want to swim free in the ocean
And I want to see sun through the fog
And I want to be loving the world with the heart of a child
And the wisdom of dogs
Oh, the wisdom of dogs
O angels, o angels of light
Come forth and deliver the night
And carry me to paradise
All dressed in white
O goddess, o goddess of war
Please tell me what you came here for
And lay down your arrows and sword
Open the door
And I want to swim free in the ocean
And I want to see sun through the fog
And I want to be loving the world with the heart of a child
And the wisdom of dogs
And I want to swim free in the ocean
And I want to see sun through the fog
And I want to be loving the world with the heart of a child
And the wisdom of dogs
Oh, the wisdom of dogs
Oh, the wisdom of dogs

Straight out of the gate - I love the effected guitar. I'm going to say tremolo, but I might be wrong. I love the way it disorientates a little across the stereo field.
This is such a well-written and well-performed song. The lyrics are superb and the voice is amazing; those harmonies in the chorus are brilliant. If this was on a Kristin Hersh album, you wouldn't blink or look twice to check. It just sounds 'right'. I don't know what I mean by 'right'. I think I mean, this sounds like my favourite music that I've bought. I would buy this. I know this listening skirmish is supposed to be an hour-long sprint listen, but I've listened to this three times in a row, and I've probably typed too much.
I know it's probably quite an incidental detail, but I love the drums. I don't know if these are played or programmed or something else, but they are so musical and completely support the song in all the right places. I really struggle with drums and when I hear a good 'un, (a) I like to say so and (b) I get slightly jealous.
Dogs are great, aren't they?
@darcistrutt Feb 2022
Beautiful sound. The heart of a child and the wisdom of dogs seems like a great combination.
@electrocelte Feb 2022
To start I said wow you have a great voice, but when it got to “And I want to swim free in the ocean” I was blown away. Awesome stuff.
@jamkar Feb 2022
This content agrees with my world view. Which is that we need more, of the wisdom of dogs. Beautiful music and vocals Robyn.
@gardeningangel1 Feb 2022
A fine testament to doggie wisdom that I completely agree with. "lay down your arrows and sword...Open the door" we must heed their profoundly simple wisdom. The music has an easy-going, drifting feeling to it that fits the lyrics so nicely.
@skibum1066 Feb 2022
Robyn,
Thanks for liking "My Rest is In You". One does not need to be a Christian to experience this song as a spiritual staff (including Buddhists) Check out my first song "Dust" which is a "first fruit" and you'll see what I mean. Shalom
@corvisier Feb 2022
Thank you for your nice comment.
And your song is realy good too !
@mahtowin Feb 2022
Beautiful!
@tamsnumber4 Feb 2022
You have the musical sensibilities of Sheryl Crow, Great vocal, the chorus is very catchy and well done with the background vocals. Clever write. Glad I found this song to listen to.
@roblincoln Feb 2022
Fantastic lyrics to go with uniquely trippy soundscape. This is so good, I had to listen twice. Very cool time signature, similar to a waltz, but not exactly.
@whispermouse Feb 2022
LOVE the little bluesy bends in the melody at the end of each verse, your vocals are super. "The wisdom of dogs" is a great hook, and the verses hang together nicely. Awesome take on the challenge!
@tunecat Feb 2022
Great lyrics - great rendition great track.. I’m really enjoying this listen. I thought I’d commented already. Liking the waltz-y feel. And the dog theme which is very creative
@nancyrost Feb 2022
This feels so good in my ears. The harmonies and reverb and rhythm and everything all have this warm and fuzzy thing going on. Heartwarming ideas here, too. Cat person here, but this is pretty close to my kind of prayer.
@janeg Feb 2022
I have missed hearing your strong authentic voice interpret. You awesome lyrics! Waht everuone else said.
@standup Feb 2022
Man, that chorus with the high harmonies, very nicely done. Then back to the verse, the low register. Which is also pretty perfect.
We have a dog, who's lovely and smart and an important member of the family. But I'm not sure she sees the river of stars, or devils or angels. She's a bit more matter-of-fact perhaps. Wise about lots of things. But not what we see in the night sky.
But this song is beautiful. The spacey guitars, the arc of the story and the arc of the melody. Very nice.
@deena Feb 2022
So beautiful - everything about it: the vocals, the lyrics, the melody and the production. I love this!
@edward9thstreet Feb 2022
Wow. Lyrics and vocals grab right from the top then the chorus takes it even higher. So good! Love you voice and writing.
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Really brilliant! Love the sentiment in the chorus and the hook is fantastic ! You you develop it so well and the phrases are inspiring. Your music on this is fabulous! Definitely album worthy!!!
@odilongreen Feb 2022
Just lovely and evocative in its swirling tunefulness, and the break into the chorus soars into the air. A transporting listen, to a wonderfully philosophical and melodic place!
@blindkiwi Feb 2022
This is awesome! I am on my 3rd play through. If this makes a bandcamp release let me know, because I will buy the album :)
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
This is one amazing and beautiful meditation. And you can fall into that endless reverb on the guitar.
@dragondreams Feb 2022
I was hooked from the opening chord. This is so "lush" (not a word I use often). It's got a wonderful flow and the music fits the lyric perfectly. As always, your performance and production are top notch. Fabulous!
@faceofeinstein Feb 2022
What a great track. I've listened a few times now and it has a familiarity to it, like I've known the song forever. I'm super into it.
@seemanski Feb 2022
I have it the other way around, I have a child and not a dog. The production sounds pretty good to me, I have one thing that I picked up on is the vocals get a bit overpowering in the chorus and the instruments get drowned out (that's all I've got). Loved the sentiment. Sorry, still not convinced I should get a dog though.
@emory Feb 2022
The chill vocals in the verses were the perfect lead in to the incredible chorus, with the high notes and harmonies! This is a really well-constructed song. Nice work!
@tuesdaygray Feb 2022
Absolutely love this!! Your voice is incredible and suits the style of the song so well! Really great lyrics, they're all so great I can't pick a favourite part! Especially love the higher notes and the melody in the chorus
@scubed Feb 2022
Oh, my - I love this so much! Powerful lyrics - those prayerful verses seeking wisdom and understanding leading into the chorus of self-knowledge and enlightenment. The melody is great, and your performance is killer - the high note in the chorus gave me chills.
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Killer melody and what a vocal performance! The theme is interesting, as more of a cat person I kinda want to see a less-sincere take on the subject ("and I want to wait for a human / to deal with the bag with my poop in") but probably for the best that you did it this way :)
@jorh Feb 2022
Some wonderfully evocative lines in here like “give way to a neon sunrise” and “oh devil in the shape of a dove”. I love how you let your voice fly free in the chorus, which very much matches the sentiment of the lyric. Great song!
@rwhosings Feb 2022
I love this! I’m with you, I have dogs, not kids. The best parts of my days often revolve around the joy they elicit.
Wisdom of dogs indeed.
Considering a dog is often a part of the imagery on the child card, I think I might need to include this song as part of my landscape for the card.
@skibum1066 Feb 2022
Your lyrics cover a lot of territory and come together like a dream. It's ethereal. I think it's a great song A prayer offered up on a Greek island two thousand years ago while watching the milky way drift by
@katestantonsings Feb 2022
"And I want to be loving the world with the heart of a child
And the wisdom of dogs". I love this. Such a gorgeous song, Robyn!
@writeandwrong Feb 2022
What an amazing thing to write a song of prayer for your pups! The spirit of this is stunning. So many of us write about our love lives, our children, etc., but not enough songs written about/for our pets. So many beautiful lines woven through from beginning to end. I love the visuals! Superb work on the challenge! Thank you for participating! :)
@phylo Feb 2022
"...with the heart of a child and the wisdom of dogs" that made me cry. I want all those things as well. What a sweet song.
@eas3637 Feb 2022
Such a great song! I love the build to the chorus and the way your voice just floats over the line "I want to swim free in the ocean." I also really enjoyed the swimmy feeling of the guitar track - it's beautifully hypnotic, a great backdrop of the prayerful feel of the lyrics.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Love this. Words, delivery, dogs. All great. So enjoyed this Robyn!
@jessicagraae Feb 2022
Love the chorus! Great sounding song-and very uplifting.
Thanks for your kind comments on my Daddy I'm in love song!
@alyxanderjames Feb 2022
The chorus hit and I got chills! As someone who also has a dog and no kids, this hit home for me. There’s so much we can learn from our furry friends and you’ve captured it well here.
@serene123 Feb 2022
Chorus is so good! Concur with comments below. Your vocals on this
@mikeb Feb 2022
Great chorus, love it when the harmony comes in!
@aeye Feb 2022
Those harmonies in the chorus are so so good. Dogs are great!
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Love that chorus. And I love dogs. And I can totally relate to the sentiment of this. Wouldn't life be so much easier if we had the wisdom of dogs...
@gm7 Feb 2022
How the chorus just rises the song to another level..great vocals..doible tracked?..very nice production.
@zeekle1998 Feb 2022
Do you ever produce something that is not amazing?? Your vocals on this just take you away, and lift you higher in the chorus. I really liked the line of seeing the world through the heart of a child, gives such a sense of innocence. And of course, the wisdom of dogs, often so much smarter than people. Such a great song to listen to.
@bandybum Feb 2022
Lovely, smooth opening. Tight rhythm section sounding great .Those brushed drums fit beautifully. Fab lyrics, so many great lines to indulge in, and that soaring vocal delivery just nails it!
Fantastic work, Robyn. Mighty fine for a day off!
Possibly my favourite track yet
Gotta go listen again now :)
@davidtaro Feb 2022
Firstly, I love your trem guitars. They’re lush. Secondly, the idea of living in the moment is so utterly on the money, and the way you sum it up with the wisdom of dogs hook is awesome. And thirdly, the bit where the chorus kicks in the melody goes up is a fabulous bit of dynamics, it really kicks the song on. Great stuff!
@donna Feb 2022
What a lovely concept, and a beautiful song as a result. Good tight lyric. Beautiful harmonies. Always a pleasure. to listen to you, Robyn. :)
@cblack Feb 2022
Ooh, this is good. Very pensive and evocative. You have a nice range, and good dynamics. It really brings this to life.
Great job!
@stephubik Feb 2022
This is so beautiful. The chorus is really, really uplifting. And also having no kids but two dogs I surely get where you’re coming from… ;) A lovely tune!
@jacobeverettwallace Feb 2022
First, your vocal tone is so lovely. I like the nice movement in this with that running bass line. The lyric has an almost Irish flair to it which I enjoy. You've got a really nice song here. Well done.
