Feb 2022 folk acoustic-one-take alt-tuning baritone depression
I've been sick for quite some time (not Covid) and it's been making a difficult time worse.
Sometimes the process of songwriting lets your heart say things to your head without interference. Or something like that.
Acoustic live one take with a Baritone guitar Capo +3 with high B tuned down to A.
Insidious
Slithering
Sliding down
Inside your ear
That little ice voice
is a liar
It’s drips inside
To drain
The heat
From your
Hardly beating
Heart
That little ice voice
Is a liar
And it whispers
That you’re alone
That you must
Moderate your tone
That your broken
Blood and bone
And that voice sounds
Like your own
Sundering
Slanderous
Like a dark wind
From the void
That little ice voice
Is a liar
Rasping
Gasping
With a grasp
You can’t avoid
That little ice voice
Is a liar
Pile up all the loves
Inside you
And that voice will bring
The fire
But no heat or light
Will ever flow
From that freezing funeral pyre
Feel the echo of a sound
That no mortal ever made
Proclaiming phony evidence
Of a debt that cannot be paid
That you are always being weighed
And that you cannot be remade
Know
Right then
That little ice voice
Is a liar
Know it in your roots
And grow it in your heart
And draw it in your head
Let your love
Flow the voice apart
That little icy voice
Is smaller than you know
And it will not withstand
Your fire
After all
That little ice voice
Is a liar

I really thine the chord progression in the wrap up. Some one came by while I was listening and said "that's my song" I think it's universal to everyone and only differs in the depth and breadth to which they relate.
@infilktion Feb 2022
Truth. I absolutely love this! Your guitar, vocal delivery, and the lyrics combined perfectly!
@janeg Feb 2022
Hugs for all that’s been going wrong, including being sick. And thank you for having the courage to be so,vulnerable. Damn that evil voice. But it did subside enough to get out a very authentic and relatable song.
@mattpierce Feb 2022
You've improved in your all-round skills
Well done!
@stevonnie Feb 2022

I do love it when you sing like this - as Nancy says, there's such catharsis. And there's real solace in that final stretch, with the warmth in your voice and hopeful chords melting down the ice into something less formidable, keeping that little bastard in its place. Beautiful stuff, Eric.
@tspoon Feb 2022
Damn that little voice is a liar. Excellent start to the year i must say. I live the emotion. Sorry to hear you've been ill, but there's no sign of sickness in this track. you sound great E!
@nancyrost Feb 2022
That chord progression is awesome, really reinforces the feelings the lyrics are expressing. I like the sounds to the words, the description and the message. Great beauty, tension and catharsis here.
@harperjen Feb 2022
Ohhhh yeahhhh. I feel this in my soul, and I haven't even listened to it yet, just read the lyrics!
@andread Feb 2022
Wow. "It's a liar." I've been struggling to finish my songs and found myself telling that dratted voice to just kiss off. So yeah, I get it.
Also....Your vocal was phenomenal.
@dudachris Feb 2022
I can really feel this one. Sending you warmth and love <3
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
Eric you flattened me with this. Twice during listening I dropped spontaneous existential f-bombs (I'm really glad I wasn't listening at school). Your vocal performance was the purest, most athentic, most vulnerable I've ever heard from you.
@ekunyi Feb 2022
Depression is hitting me hard right now, and I felt this to my core. I'm sorry it's getting you too, but I hope writing this song helped a bit. (It certainly helped me, and you have my gratitude for that.)
@tawny249 Feb 2022
Also hugs. You did some nifty chord things there that I can't identify because lack of music theory, but it sounded complicated. I'm glad you got this out of your head. It's true.
@flw3rch1ld Feb 2022
(Hug) depression has been hitting really hard lately. This is a really great song! I love the feeling of hope throughout in saying that little ice voice is a liar. Very empowering. Thank you!
@rwhosings Feb 2022
I’m so glad you found a way to express this.
I’m here for all the songs about invisible suffering, they need to be heard, and sung with just such conviction as you have here.
Mental health metaphors are of high interest for me. Your little ice voice is one of my favourites I’ve come across.
You are right,
It’s a liar.
@jmadison Feb 2022
Awesome lyrics, Eric!
Love the angry tone in your voice for "is a liar".
The baritone is a great choice
This song is dripping with truth.
@mlv Feb 2022
This is so poignant, Eric. Very powerful. And yes - it is a liar.
@jlampson Feb 2022
Oh man, this has such a great sound, suiting the content perfectly. I also have an ice voice that sounds like my own, and I know it's a liar, but it lies a lot. Burn that MF as bright and loudly as you can, and let the heat and oxygen of your friends and family (and family here, too) keep it going. You're beautiful, my friend. Be good to yourself.
P.S. There is a #capochallenge and you have won at it, good sir!
@mhorning Feb 2022
I don't know if you or Jen plays Guild Wars 2, but you have captured the essence of Jormag, the ice dragon, who's domain is lies, doubt, and deceit.
@katestantonsings Feb 2022
"Pile up all the loves
Inside you
And that voice will bring
The fire" Chills. Depression can be such a convincing liar. I'm so glad you created this out of the experience. Your vocals and guitar sound amazing. Well done!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Damn, this is powerful. Your voice is awesomely large and quiet at the same time. Quite the range, and the bari guitar sounds so good here.
Love the topic and how you've brought it out. Great job.
@crumbleboy Feb 2022
The harmonics on that baritone guitar sound great, love the tone of the guitar paired with your voice, balanced really well.
