I have so much joy in my life, but it hasn't always been that way. Back when I was unhappily married and miserable, I was told that joy was a choice and I just couldn't wrap my head around that. It really was like trying to teach a fish how to ride a bicycle. Well, this here fish jumped into the sea and set herself free. These days, I choose joy when I get a flat tire. I choose joy when I'm exhausted. I choose joy when my kids are on my last nerve. The choice of joy is now available to me, and for that I'm forever grateful.
I was told once that joy was a choice
I was too miserable to be able to see it
My unhappiness went unvoiced
Joy felt too far away to reach it
No joy
I couldn’t hear it through the noise
No joy
How could it be a choice
How could I figure out how to choose
Something inaccessible, inexpressible to me
I’d try and I’d try and I’d try and I’d lose
My circumstances just threw me
No joy
I couldn’t hear it through the noise
No joy
How could it be a choice
Like trying to teach a fish to ride a bicycle
It’s not possible, nonsensical
Wouldn’t that fish be happier in the sea
If the choice of joy is unavailable
It could be situational
Set yourself free
Oh joy
I couldn’t hear it through the noise
Oh joy
It really is a choice

What a story! I glad you're a happier person now. I really don't know why but I get some vibes from The Cranberries. Nice harmonies

The vibe is very Deloris O'Riordan, I can see the influence. Great idea to write a song about. I often wonder how some people are always joyful and I think that it is because their circumstances are so great. But, maybe it is because they aren't going to get beat down. Very nice ditty.

*How did you make THE leap?

This song speaks to me. How did you make leap? It’s hard.
Love the warmth of your voice here.

You inspired me during the Berklee chats and you inspire me now. This is beautiful, Caitlin!

So glad you set yourself free and found joy. Those liner notes and this song are inspiring.

This is so gorgeous, the lyrics, the vocals, the harmonies, the production, especially the meaning! It sounds rich and textured and really evocative. Congrats! And congrats on escaping to the sea!!
