Edith’s Symphony © Sean McGaughey Feb 4, 2022
Key of C 3/4 waltz
There’s an old guitar hung on the wall
In the basement hallway
Hasn’t been played in 20 odd years,
Since my mother-in-law passed away
Well Edith was an old-country picker
In Mama Mabel’s style
She played pop hits from the 60s and 70s
It was the only thing left, that made her smile.
She’d play all her favorite songs
With chords and melody
When my mother-in-law played her guitar
It sounded like a symphony to me,
It sounded like a symphony.
I played it in my classroom a few years
but it was worn out and hard to play
It spent a spent 15 years in the basement
Dusty and hidden away.
Now it hangs over the basement stair
A happy daily memory,
Of the all the times Edith played her guitar
And what they meant to me.

Beautiful way to honor your mother-in-law's memory; both the display of her guitar, and putting her into a song that means so much...

Beautiful story-song with heart. This made me feel nostalgic for my own musical family members who have passed on.
@janeg Feb 2022
Hard to add to the praise you have already received. Very moving tribute. Have Nancy’s relatives heard it?
@aflinner Feb 2022
Lovely. Thank you for sharing these memories. Both the guitar and this song are a sweet way to remember her. Great work.
@bethdesombre Feb 2022
Such a sweet song of remembrance. And I love that you still have the guitar (and the memories). I also like what you do melodically/rhythmically on "it sounded like a symphony to me"

Fantastic take on the prompt and a really moving song. A true gem and proof that skirmishes can bring out the best in us. I love them!
@mandolinda Feb 2022
So nice to be a sweet memory. Families that share are the ones that care. Such a lovely song.
@gwyn1234 Feb 2022
Such a wonderful song...so warm and natural with a touching backstory.
@unici Feb 2022
So, now I have time to listen back. :-)
This is sooo beautiful. I love the melody and the story is lovely and it's put in a way in words and music that it brings the "good old times" feeling to me. Makes me sentimental...

Wow. Honestly teared up. Across the room from me is the acoustic guitar I inherited from my grandfather and learned to play on. What a great earnest tribute to those who passed the gift of music to us.
Thank you for this.
As for a critique: a simple waltz but great subtle choices with what you are doing that emphasize the right moments in both the vocals and the storytelling are what really sell it. The slightly sweetened melancholy of the lyrics is really matched with the atmosphere here.
Again, great work and thanks for sharing.

The intro made me laugh. Great melody and nice story. I’m really curious how you got the vocal effect (which sounds great) and the guitar with no effect did you use two mics or record separate. Really great song I enjoyed it!
@crutherford Feb 2022
Oh Sean this is lovely. i love the magic that can happen in one take. And there is lots of magic here. Simply beautiful.
@hummingbear Feb 2022
Wonderful tribute, excellent storytelling. The rhythm had me swaying a bit, embracing that memory. Everything fits together beautifully in one-take excellence.
@emkaydeebee Feb 2022
What a beautiful story - so well written in the way you bring both Edith and the guitar to the fore. Gorgeous delivery. Love it.
@moonraccoon Feb 2022
Such a great sentiment, and a really nice package for it.
@stuartbenbow Feb 2022
What a lovely tribute, and a great way to honor her and her guitar. Well done!
@vegansongs Feb 2022
Wow.. This skirmish song is a moving, heartfelt tribute to Edith. Really well done.

This is so sweet and makes my heart warm! Wonderful skirmish!
