Feb 2022 finnish poem impressionism waltz
This is a Finnish poem by Eino Leino which is actually a translation of a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg in Swedish.
And now I'm going to eat a Runeberg torte because I'm in Finland and it's Runeberg's birthday!
Laineet
Käy lainehet määrää vailla
meren selkää siintelevää;
oi, oisinpa muiden lailla
laps Ahtolan kimmelpää,
niin syttämätön sydäntaikain,
niin vieras, viileä, sees,
eik’ autuaampien aikain
mull’ yhtään muistoa ees!
Mut jos meren aalto ma oisin,
sama oisin kuin nytkin oon,
meren voimalla lainehet voisin
taas tahtoa taisteloon.
Ne leikiksi lempeä luulee,
sydänhaavoilleen hymyää,
yö yksin mun huutoni kuulee:
josp’ oisin kuin ihmiset nää!
Here's a hasty translation:
Waves, they keep going in the
open sea yonder without destination;
Oh, would that I were, like others,
a shimmering child of Ahti's regime (the sea)
so immune to the hexes of the heart,
so alien, cool, tranquil,
and with no memory of
more blissful past times!
Yet, were I an ocean wave,
I'd be the same as I am now,
with the power of the sea I'd
again will the waves to clash.
They mistakenly think love is a game,
smirk at heart-throbs,
only night has ears to my cry:
Would that I were like these people!

Wow. Left field or what? This is so off-grid it’s brilliant.
