Feb 2022 folk singer singer-songwriter girl-with-guitar
Last week I saw a news item on Instagram about a fugitive criminal who was quickly nabbed because his handsome mugshot was posted and shared many times over on social media. Apparently, one of the original commenters had written "Daddy, I'm in love with a criminal". (Sorry, lady, if you were going to use that for a song.)
The article also described how women "falling in love" with good looking criminals is phenomenon. Anyway, the best comment on the article thread was one to the effect of "yeah, just wait until he smiles. Bet them chicklets is all messed up." But how is this considered a revelation, that women might fall in love with a dude she knows for a fact is bad?
Daddy, I’m in love with a criminal
By Jessica Graae 2/4/22
Oh, daddy, I’m in love with a criminal.
Please catch me ‘fore I’m gone.
Oh, daddy, he has taken me prisoner.
Those blue eyes hold me on.
And I don’t know what he’s done,
And I don’t know who he’s killed.
And I do not have a plan:
I’ve lost my own free will.
I have lost my will. I have lost my will.
Oh, daddy, I’ve become a criminal.
I’ve squandered all my time.
Oh, daddy I am still a prisoner.
The fault is only mine.
And you don’t know what I’ve done.
And you don’t know who I’ve killed.
And I do not have a plan:
I’ve lost my own free will.

So forbidding and gut-wrenching. Aesthetically pleasing performance, so beautifully mournful. Stunning piece!

I LOVE the way you intersperse the vocal lines with guitar lines in the verses. This song is just so moody and beautiuful.

Nice write: the grim turn the story takes is perfectly carried by the lovely vocal and sparse arrangement.

You might check out my friend @crumbleboy . He's got some similar lyric themes.

Great inspiration for the song! I also saw the article, he was pretty nice looking ha. Anyway back to the song. I loved the interplay between the criminal/prisoner lines, and the switch between the victim and perpetrator. Full of mystery too, making the listeners imagination fill in the gaps. Top quality writing

Haunting.
Loss of free will. No plan. Her life now in parallel with the criminal.
Beautiful and disturbing vocals and guitar.
I've seen some of those beauty mug shots.. Which are your favs?

Great idea and use of the news. At the beginning I thought this might be a parody, but it turns out to be a sincere and tragic confession. Reminds me of a sad Irish or Scottish ballad. Love your voice and melancholy guitar picking.

Easy listen. Nice guitar work. What kind of guitar? The Lyrics are engaging but even without good lyrics, the song would work
@mikeb Feb 2022
A sadly stark tale The desperation of the lyrics comes through to touch the listener's heart, because you are correct the 'going for the bad guy' thing does happen too much.

Another excellent song Jessica, dig the mood and the guitar runs.

A dark, delicious lament. I like the traditional folk sound you've got going on. I really like the twist at the end!

This is so dark and gorgeous. I really like the way the emphasis is on what this attraction is doing inside the narrator's head. Great melody, and what a showcase for your voice.
