Here's my contribution to the weekly Body Part challenge. An ode to different ways we can use our ears (and lack thereof).
Ear Training
In a classroom with my tribe
My head down as I focus
On a repeated progression
And transcribe
First soprano line then bass
Inner voices in a jumble
Figure out the framework
And the rest falls into place
When finding connection in life’s melody
Train the ear to listen for what is key
In the hall where we rehearsed
Our eyes meet as we talk
She’s gasping for the air sucked out
As everyone dispersed
Pain flies out like startled birds
Pouring out like stinging tears
I tamp down a need to share
And embrace her words
When finding connection in life’s melody
Train the ear to listen for what is key
Pacing in a rented room
Raging against his god
Baby grand flat on the floor
Hosting a wire bloom
Singing a repeated phrase
Scratching on the walls
He conjures something beautiful
Rediscovered in future days
When trapped in a world where sound has died
He trains his ear to listen for what lies inside
When finding connection in life’s melody
Train the ear to listen for what is key

I can really relate to the music training to life metaphor and get nostalgic. I love this idea of prioritizing what is important through listening.

You've taken the music of etudes and exercises and made into life lessons. Very well done.

Nice storytelling Jay! Very vivid imagery, and I love the connection you form between music class, music theory, and human connection. Very pretty.

Whooooaaaaa you just transported me back to theory class in college. Very pretty melody!
