Feb 2022 instrumental odd-time-signature big-production supply-chain-issues incompetence
I was noodling along to a drum beat playing my trusty Jaydee bass this afternoon and suddenly realised that I'd ended up writing something that sounds suspiciously like a TV show theme tune...
The title is kind of tongue in cheek because it's an instrumental, but it's also kinda not. I went shopping at lunchtime and a lot of things I'm used to seeing on supermarket shelves are missing.
This one's in 6/8, if you're trying to figure it out. I'm rather taken by how this one swings along.

I can certainly see this as music for a show, probably not the intro piece, it's way too long for that, but I can easily imagine it as the background music for an amateur sleuth trying to do the CSI thing and looking for clues (in a hurry, of course, while the suspect is distracted enough to let them search an office or residence for just a few minutes). Fun.

This bass sounds so good! This instrumental has a great chord progression and the production is tight. I like that you kept the drums simple because it lets everything else shine.

The modernist spawn of some Irish fiddler on acid. I like the "Hot Rats" fusion elements and the 6/8 really does hark back to Irish sessions. Love how the guitar meanders throughout and that tone is ace.
PS I am so glad I am an Irish Citizen. Living in Catalunya these days as a Brit has become a bureaucratic nightmare. Blame Brexit indeed. A friend in Cornwall sent me a CD of her music through the post and I had to pay €6.50 in import duties!

wow, this is really wonderful- that bass is fantastic- and that synthy bit at about 20-35 sec in has a very emerson lake and palmer vibe (is there a name for that patch/instrument btw?), and love the guitar at 1:40 or so.... -this is wonderfully melodic and fun and works well!
@heliosonorous Feb 2022
Nice one, it does have an introductory feel to it as though the show is about to begin, your bass sounds really good!
@fuzzy Feb 2022
Yeah, it *does* sound like a theme song for a show I'd like to see.
Lovely bass work here.
Really nice instrumental tune.
That piano track is pretty jaunty!
Oh yes, this is gold throughout.
I enjoyed this very much.
@elainedimasi Feb 2022
This has sass. Yes. This, will do.
@jacobeverettwallace Feb 2022
Loving this 6/8 vibe! It's got tons of flair and panache. I can hear the TV tune vibe but I think it stands great on its own. Nice work!
@bri4n Feb 2022
Well I had to come listen to something with the tag of 'incompetence'. Good listen! I will probably hit you up next time I make your twitch stream for some drum inspiration advice...
@tseaver Feb 2022
Nice write: the drive and groove are great, and the arrangement fills them out nicely.
@dreamscuba Feb 2022
Great instrumental piece. A Jaydee bass - nice. He did some work on a guitar for me a long time ago.
This flows really well and some tasty playing many instruments. Some great haunting guitar playing.
@nadine Feb 2022
If you ever make a TV show that's the perfect intro. Somewhere in between top gear and game show. I like the swinging drums.
@mikeb Feb 2022
The bass takes center stage in this song, even when other instruments are playing a melody, it continues on in a bold counterpoint.
The 6/8 beat keeps things swinging the whole way, it could definitely be a theme song!
@yam655 Feb 2022
This is very nice. I like it.
This kind of sounds like a graphical adventure game soundtrack to me. (Like the Sierra games.)
@blindkiwi Feb 2022
Very nice! I was half expecting a few random bursts of silence for the empty shelves but not at all disappointed that your shop of tunes is always well stocked
@doggolito Feb 2022
How many guitar tracks do you need ?
Chris : yes.
Love the bassline from start to finish. Not sure if it's an opening theme or ending theme because there are elements for both uses
Very unconventional yet easily to listen to :)
@vivalarayna Feb 2022
Yes, very catchy, and the lack of lyrics plays off the title in an amusing (???) manner. Really do feel that swing. Now I want to know what TV show deserves such a theme song!
@aeye Feb 2022
This has a really great swing to it like you said. I do like how it's kinda TV theme-ish but also not. Produced really well.
@nancyrost Feb 2022
Very catchy in its weird and jaunty way, and love the bass tone especially.
@lexabear Feb 2022
A fun variety of instruments and phrases. Kept it novel throughout
@sapient Feb 2022
Oh, how depressingly cheerful.
Music for the generation denied olive oil, parmesan and possibly even gummi bears.
But I love how much it has echoes of Steve Vai in it.
It's underpinned by a really lovely set of chords.
You should offer this to your local shops.
Just to try and cheer em up ;)

I really like this. I'd be interested to hear it played by a conventional band. You won't be old enough to know but the bit 1/3 of the way through with the descending bass is the verse of "Jealousy" by Wasted Youth. Not saying drop that bit but maybe demote it to a linking phrase. Cracking stuff nonetheless.
