Feb 2022 electropop harmonies synthpop queer pride
CONTENT WARNING: coming out, comp-het
THIS ONE IS VERY PERSONAL and huge for me. Looking back honestly at my queer childhood and finally setting that little queer kid free and telling her she doesn't have to feel weird or shameful about stuff that she didn't have a name for...
I wasn’t allowed to close the door of my room
When a boy was over
I didn’t ask and I guess that I Played by the rules
well enough
But when Elizabeth came by
The door rule didn’t apply
No we built forts And closed the door
Just because
We would pretend that we were
Jasmine and Jafar in Aladin
and we’d take turns being the one who was bad
or the girl with all the power
And no one ever questioned what
Went on behind the door
Coz we were girls
And we were good girls
Anyhow
And I felt something unexpected
But nobody had given a clue
That I could love Aladdin
And be bad just like Jafar
And I could also like Jasmine too
There was a sleepover night
where we played truth or dare in the kitchen
and Sara and Jessica kissed
Just like Barbie and Ken
By when mom and dad came down
It was over at once
and phone calls were made
And I don’t think Sara stayed over again...
And I felt something unexpected
A weird kind of shame
For the fun we were figuring out
So I pushed the shame deep down
Kept the door open when boys were around
but I never understood what the shame was all about
Yea, we just learn
What we see
We just do
What we think we need
To be the good little girls
We were raised to be
But sometimes we find something underneath
I am a grown up
Searching through oceans of journals and pictures
And I see a girl so confused by the world
that was supposed to be free
So I’m reaching back thru time
Freeing the shame that stayed inside
Removing the door
To find who I was meant to be

So honest, simple, and true.
I love it.
So very cool.
Love the arrangement.

This is GREAT!!! I love the door rules in the first verse and I love how this develops (and "we were good girls"), and the B section and "And I could also like Jasmine too" and "a weird kind of shame / for the fun we were figuring out." This might be my favorite of the songs in your project of excellent songs. And that last verse is a lovely reflection (and how you hearken back to the doors).

Really great. I appreciate how confessional and honest this is. It's really well done. Yes.

I love this song! So proud of you for sharing so much, and telling your story. I love the playful vibe behind the deeply personal lyrics.

Wow wow, this is really really good. Not only crazy catchy, but the personal feeling shines through and creates a vibe that’s hard to fake. Well done!

Really well done. I love the keyboard/synth bounce that goes along with the fun and yet serious lyrics. p.s. my 15 year old daughter isn't allowed to close the door with a boy over :-). Guess I should rethink that. Love your song - gorgeous.

So much power in this.. brought with an airy, light and free effect,
Your song is beautiful.

Good write! Unpacking the stuff we built for ourselves from the bits and pieces the grownups let fall is super liberating. The harmonies are super sweet.

Love love this! The melody, the harmonies, the lyrics, and the little keyboard boing boings that remind me of video games. <3
