ADDED a first cut musically
Postcards
She said she couldn’t settle down
until she’d seen the world
I said that I’d be waiting
And let events unfurl
The postcard said from Amsterdam
And wished that I were there
She said that it was beautiful
An answer to her prayers
A sent note back to her
Said wishing I was there
Told her I was waiting
Telling here “take care”
She said she couldn’t settle down
until she’d seen the world
I said that I’d be waiting
And let events unfurl
The letter said “par avion”
Addressed from Zanzibar
She said that she would be back soon
Never thought she’d go that far
I asked if she was coming home
The be here in my arms
She said she had some more to see
Should have set off my alarms
She said she couldn’t settle down
until she’d seen the world
I said that I’d be waiting
And let events unfurl
The envelope smelled of French perfume
The postmark said “Par-ee”
I recognized your handwriting
Addressing it to me..
She said she would return soon
And be there in my arms
I must admit, a fool I was
To fall for all her charms
She said she couldn’t settle down
until she’d seen the world
I said that I’d be waiting
And let events unfurl
I collected all those postcards
It was quite the stack
That was when I realized
She’s never coming back
I should have known it earlier
But couldn’t face the truth
That I’d been waiting all those years
And wasted all my youth
She said she couldn’t settle down
Should have took her at her word
I should have seen right through the lie
And known it was absurd.
She’s never going to settle down
It’s more than I can take
the world has more to offer
the wait was my mistake

Well done, Fred! I love the way we go along with you, keeping a foolish glimmer of hope alive all the way through, so when the final four lines feel like real catharsis and acceptance. Really nice!

If anyone is inspired to compose some music for this, I would love it!

Wow! That's quite a story. Very nicely told. A tight write, and with good details. A poignant tale as well. Nice work. :)
