Unlike the first 2 this year, I didn't have any ideas for what I wanted to write. I pulled up a drum patch and quickly came up with a beat. The patch had a few chord samples that inspired me. I wrote what became the chorus progression. It was clear it was a Steely Dan vibe so I let that lead me.
I wanted to write some dark lyrics and unfortunately, these are based on real life. I had a friend die from an OD recently. This is based on him. He was a good guy but he had a hard time staying sober.
So many people have died from Fentanyl so I played off of that and it became Finn Tenille.
Verse 1
Finn’s been in and he’s been out of the rooms
Never picked up a year
He’s the guy who will call you to check in
His shares are always sincere
Shakes your hand when you walk up to the door
Clubhouse all knows his name
And we all know that he’s been here before
Hope he stays clean today
Chorus 1
Finn Tennille, you are cool
Hope one day you will break through
We know you know we love you
Call before you use
Verse 2
Send a text and you’ll get a quick response
Didn’t happen this time
So I call and it does not even ring
Something doesn’t feel right
The hotel found his body yesterday
Finn was 33
A lost soul who one dared too many times
We hope you have peace
Chorus 2
Finn Tennille, you were cool
Wish we could have gotten through
We know you knew we loved you
Did the best you could do

These lyrics hit a painful vein...art does that sometimes. I felt this song more than I heard it.

Aahhaha, I wasn’t even there with reading your liner notes that I thought ¡Steely Dan! So cool and so my time. Very well written and performed. Thank you for the music. I really mean it! Replay
Edit: am sorry for your loss

This is really well done, and a nice way to honor your friend.

Great groove to this. You've really nailed the Steely Dan vibe you were aiming for. The winding guitar lines in the background are ace and the play on words for the title is excellent. A lovely tribute to your friend. I love that you've turned such a horrible experience into something as cool as this.

The chorus is great, get a bit of a sting vibe from the vocal. A sad story, as the little details really make it more relatable and emotive.

Your guitar and bass work is excellent, and this story is super relatable. The dark material and the upbeat rhythm work pretty well together, it was not at all what I was expecting given the liner notes. The doubled vox on the chorus sound super nice!

That name was very clever. As someone in recovery this was so relatable. I’ve been Finn and I’ve been the the guy pulling for him. Today, I’m the latter. Musically, the vocal was on point. Loved the harmonies, felt a bit early Police but was also feeling some thriller era Michael. Fantastic song. You can consider yourself watchlisted!
