Started writing a guitar part last night, seemed OK, then recorded it. New strings. Really bright. But that's what I got that night.
Today I came up with a lyric, a made-up story about a love gone wrong that never particularly happened to me.
Mixing just a guitar and a voice is not easy.
My dog barks in the 3rd verse, but I didn't re-do it.
Walking down 7th Street
You said this will never last
You can’t be here with me
If you’re living in the past
CHORUS:
Nothing that you ever said
Made me hold out hope
I was so trusting
but what we had was nothing
We were lovers for a little while
Passing away some time
Give and take for both of us
Dinner and a bottle of wine
I’ll go back to your apartment
Gather up my stuff
A bag of books and papers
The memories I'll never touch
You see yourself as a pretty girl
Like that’s all that you need
Waiting for someone to see it too
Give you a life of ease

That's a pretty guitar part! The lushness of the chords brings out wistfulness in the lyric and kind of softens the bite of it. Nice details in the picking. I like the off-rhyme -- and off-match! -- of trusting / nothing.

I love the ascending guitar in the verse, but that mini bridge before the verses! Lots of detail going on with your guitar playing. Really cool. This song has a lot going on for it and I like it a lot. Well done again!

I really like the guitar part, it sounds a little Neil Young-ish. Sounds great. Nice write. Sad song.

I like The contrast between the cheerful sound of “nothing” at the end of the chorus and the meaning of the lyrics, and the little guitar licks in the verses.

how hard it is to try :( so relatable -- sounds great
@themelgoexperience Feb 2022
The lyrical content here is relatable for many-I certainly resonated. The guitar on here reminded me of a couple of tracks on Pink Moon. Really nice--I don't think you can tell that these are brand new strings (not that that's a bad thing either!)

This is great, perfect balance between vocals and guitar (not just the mixing), you really have found a great sound here. Lyrics are great, your voice is perfect..... This should be released!

Reminds me of a few relationships I was in a looooooooooooooooooong time ago. I like the story, it really is something most of us have probably experienced one way or another.

Beautiful rendition. When a song works with just voice and guitar it's a good one - at least in my opinion.

Always find it hard to mix recordings with few elements myself. Think the guitar sounds quite nice, not to bright . Good and believable story lyrics.

The strings might feel better broken in but I think the shiny new brightness works here. You have them into two sections but I think the bit from I was so Trusting to passing away some time” is the heart of the song. For some reason it sounds more unified with these lines than with the other variations I wonder if there’s a way to make that more of the focus. Like maybe if you were to repeat the line “ but what we had was nothing” after “passing away some time” you could treat that as chorus and think of “nothing that you ever said” as the pre-chorus.
Probly too much to think about when your on to other songs but food for thought. That section is too good not to shine more of a spotlight on it. I enjoyed listening.

Nice write! The turn from "trusting" to "nothing" is bang on. Wonderful guitar part, and a fine vocal performance.
@tcelliott Feb 2022
That guitar is beautiful. And not too bright to my ears. And your melody is beautifully painful.
@markg Feb 2022
The guitar rhythm really drives the song and allows the vocals to leave a lot of space.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Loved the song, Eric! There's some kind of cool progression going on on the guitar that I really like (at the end of the lines in the chorus). And the lyrics/vocals are great, you have such a great voice. Really nice song!

I just barely heard the dog!
I like the little specifics in the lyrics, and your guitar works is really solid. Nice job.
