This is what I hope to be the opening track of a concept EP. The EP will be semi-autobiographical invented history of a kind of cycle of life. My mother died when I was 3 and I never knew her. The first track is a kind of take on a jazz funeral march replacing dixieland with a samba-reggae rhythm. It depicts a kind of imagined conversation from a dreamlike moment that I can almost remember but is unclear whether it is memory or imagined from childhood stories.
Once when I was three I had a mom.
Didn’t last long .
She put me on her knee and said now son.
Life lasts for a day and then it’s done.
One day she said life is like a game.
You learn to love and learn
And practice every day.
And then she had another thing to say…
Fate . . .
's just habit that hates change.
But if you try you might just give yourself a chance.
And chance …
Given enough time
will sometimes . . . sometimes
eventually
break your destiny.
Now before I go
There’s one thing more
that you should know
The love we share will never die.

Since you referenced this one in the awesome song I just heard, I had to check out this one, too.
Quite a hypnotic, exotic groove - and another super vocal. Compelling song and concept. And that last verse - wow.

Great opening to your album - sad but positive lyric, I really like the little touches that add additional sparkle - the panned synth, the lovely piano overlay at the end. The samba jazz thing works really well to keep the track moving along

This samba rhythm rocks. Dark humour appeals to me. Great vocal. Like the fact the lyrics end on a positive note. Production is ace. The jazz funeral march vibe works so well. Classy stuff! #tit4tat

#tit4tat time great music! absolutely compelling! this is class stuff. love the vox effect! great swap of the jazz to this for a funeral style - very good and a real earworm

It's a good way to start a concept album... from womb to tomb.
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate's - love it.
And the music's groovy too. Well done.
Thanks for your thoughful response yesterday. Good to hear you here bringing the yummy this february.
@theawkwardsleep Feb 2022
Your vocals and their treatment really fit this vibe well. Interesting start to this concept album.

So love the concept and the whole take on filling in the blanks. I met my father when I was in my 40s and there was so much to fill in but when there’s no way to fill in the blanks, well, how do you deal with that? This is pretty awesome. Love the vocals!! And the rest, of course. :)
@hanley Feb 2022
Love the samba march rhythm, still got that real nice Norleans feel like Dr John or something.
Beautiful concept and execution, and it really lifts when the falsetto kicks in. Really enjoy the unexpected turns at destiny too, a completely different place to finish up in and a positive place at that. Keen to hear more of this concept album :-)
@williamjames Feb 2022
You constructed the lyrics very well, really has this sense of confused longing. I like the happy Latin rhythm mashing with the somber lyrics. Seems like a very interesting concept album!
@guitarpatz83 Feb 2022
I think the samba-funereal idea is inspired! Has a kind of day of the dead feel. Love how it builds, rises then falls. Your voice is so strong in this. When you come in with “one day” it sounds fantastic with the chord changes moving around beneath. Then the falsetto of the drawn out fate/chance lyrics.
So much going on here it’s a joy. Finally, the outro feels like a pianist playing his last song at a club, and then everything fades leaving the drums which to me symbolises how life carries on after we’re gone… a love letter to you mum, what a beautiful piece to share with us all - I’ll be coming back to this!
@mardeycranbleson Feb 2022
Woah gorgeous vocals on this - really enjoying the Melodys and the overall atmosphere.
@cleanshoes Feb 2022
What a great rhythm. I like the "jazz funeral march" feel, which perfectly bridges the gap between lament and celebration. The drawn out "fate" beginning the second verse is a great touch, and the piano section which closes out the song is fabulous.
@frozenlonesome Feb 2022
I really enjoyed this song. Infectious beat and melody. Great playing and the vocals are excellent. Watching for more.
@davidtaro Feb 2022
Heeeeey there. Sorry I missed this one earlier (too many songs at the start of FAWM!!). I love how you’ve already got your eyes on the prize with that EP, I can definitely envisage this as the opener. There’s real movement between sections, it feels like an intro to something bigger. That jazzy rhythm is very compelling, the words are dark and poignant, and the melodies are great. I’d maybe back off the reverb on the vocal a touch, just to bring it forward slightly in the mix. But that’s really minor, this is an awesome start to the month!
@tunecat Feb 2022
I like the live samba drums and the piano riff .. unexpected... You've got that dream like feel in the treatment of the vocal - dripping with atmosphere. Like the long notes which give the song chance to breathe and for us to retune back into the rhythm. Chord changes.. mm, tasty.. remind me of Beatles and that era.... Interesting. Will come back and check out the rest of the album!!
@bigmood Feb 2022
"she didn't last long", whew. Brutal humor that sets up the story well. I love how much thought you put into the arrangement, the strings coming in in the middle of the first verse is great ear candy.
@adforperu Feb 2022
Excellent rhythm for this one, so infectious. That opening line is dripping with black humour, I was immediately on board for the song and message. There's some lovely Beatlesy progressions in this, especially the bridge, and the falsetto stuff is delightful. I feel like the vocal FX are a bit too overwhelming, they seem to swallow the sonic field a little bit, but that'd really be a minor tweak to what is an excellent piece!
@nadine Feb 2022
Heavy story. I didn't expect this rhythm from my favourite FAWM fingerpicker. It works so well and the harmonies are great. I especially loved the last stanza. So much drama and beauty.
@apolez3 Feb 2022
Very poetic.. Great Job!! Sweet.
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Wow...Heartfelt and hard to imagine. Great work with the production, lyrics and vocals. The samba reggae-rhythm is very cool. It sets a good backdrop for your story.
@katestantonsings Feb 2022
Incredibly unique mix! Your vocals sound amazing holding out fate. Goosebumps at the final line regarding your mother, Benedetto! I think it will touch your listener’s heart. I look forward to following the progress of your concept album!
@standup Feb 2022
Nice groove to this.
I like that long vocal hold on "Fate" (and chance). Nice arrangement, I like the harmonies, a bit of choir-like sound.
