I have acquired an Eight stringed Baritone Ukulele since last FAWM - this one just cried out to come up with a tune for these lyrics; so I let it.
response to the "Values" prompt Skirmish 3rd Feb
(G) You say you've got your values and I've got mine
(C) Mine come from my heart yours you say from the (G) divine
(C) Mine boil down to the famous golden (G) rule
(D) Yours have restrictions that are (C) very (D) often (G) cruel
CHORUS
I (F) have no truck with values built on (G) hate
Small (F) minded people your behaviour they'd dic(G)tate
The (C) only faith that fits me like a (G) glove
Is the (D) old Beatles song (C) "All you (D) need is (G) love!"
I'm not one to preach I've no gospel to proclaim
Nor do I believe everyone's rights are the same
There are philosophies and practices built upon fear
And in my humble opinion deserve to disappear
CHORUS
How do I judge what is wrong and what is right?
If I have no deity to listen to my plight.
I ask the question "Will this action bring harm?"
And if I feel it does, then I sound my own alarm.
CHORUS

Great job with the 8-string Uke! Throw a capo on that bad boy and write another one...!

We are kindred spirits and I love how you have expressed the values that matter. I was an ethics practitioner so,I have been asked many times how I could be ethical without a God. I used to tell them that half of professional membership were devout and the other half atheists, but no hypocritics. And I agree with Sean that using an old-timey tune is perfect for this message.
@nadine Feb 2022
Your 8 string mandolin is perfect for country and bluegrass. I never heard that instrument before. Great lyrics and I like the Beatles reference
@hmstreetteam Feb 2022
Oh, wow. The lyrics are a classic rhetorical construction and bring their point home. And then of course I approve of the heart-based Beatles faith that the song proposes in place of what might be more traditional ways of thinking.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
This sounds great, and I love (and am coveting) the 8-string baritone ukulele! I love the message and the lyrics are well put together. I also like the different unexpected chords!
@billwhite51 Feb 2022
imagine walking down the street and hearing a string band playing this, now that would be a city worth living in.
@hurongrand Feb 2022
I absolutely LOVE this! Your lyrics are clever, and I relate to the sentiment. I also hadn't heard of an 8-string baritone uke before, but it sounds folksy & charming, definitely perfect for this song.
@porrectus Feb 2022
I like your pickin'. Good message, too. Nice work
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
This is so cool - and I'm in total agreement - All You Need Is Love is a mantra to live by! It's a great tune and that baritone uke sounds fantastic!
@wobbiewobbit Feb 2022
ooh nice, went down that road a little myself in this skirmish but is too tricky for me to write that stuff, but you do a great job of putting it clearly. love the sound of that uke and your delivery just sits perfectly. fantastic skirmishing
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
Testify! How fitting to set this song as an old Time country song. It's association with those kind of quote unquote values amplifies the power of the song.
@pabrizzer Feb 2022
this is a terrific skirmish response - a good song regardless of how long it took to write - 'i sound my own alarm' is the only line that seemed a little forced by the need to rhyme imho
i did love that you squeezed imho into this one berni
i reckon i've heard you on your own pulpit a few times
@keithcuts Feb 2022
"all you need is love"
this line is so effective at proclaiming your stance on the topic
your strong emotion on the topic is conveyed well.
quality sound all around.
well played berni!
@vivalarayna Feb 2022
I had no idea an 8-string baritone ukulele even existed, but it sounds super cool! You asked some good questions here - "How do I judge what is wrong and what is right?" I like the Beatles reference. It Works very well to summarize your points.
@sheilerk Feb 2022
This is SO good!! I couldn't agree with you more!!
This is exactly my philosophy, and I love how you put it so clearly.
That ukulele really is perfect for this, and I liked the shift in melody in the chorus. Like I said, SO good!!
@mattwdunn Feb 2022
Love your voice Berni and your lyrics are great. Ive just got myself a ukulele so will try and get it into a new tune sometime this month
