A song about the passing of generations and how I'm not ready to be without them. Apologies for the rather rough vocals, a frog appears to have rented my throat for the day...
I had to bodge a new intro, because I wrote half of this song before yesterday's skirmish and pinched it for that!
OLDER SHOULDERS
Older shoulders carried me when I was small
Then as I got older I grew a bit too tall
Still I leant on them for wisdom
When they had words I’d listen
Older shoulders, I’d have fallen without you
I was twenty-two the August when the last survivor fell
From the wartime generation with their crystal view of hell
She was barely there in spirit
Her body mostly withered
Older shoulders seem to know it’s time to go
I’ve always been more at ease when I’m looking up
In the opposite direction I tend to see only dust
And the mess left at my feet
Each badly chosen street
Older shoulders, one generation left
That I can look up to with memories they kept
Some day I cannot face
They will pass on just the same
Then the older shoulders that they see belong to me

I love this! It grabbed me and stirred memories of my wonderful grandparents. I like the way you handled the last verse and brought it back home. Thank you so much for this heartfelt lyric and musical delivery. Now I want to listen to more of your songs.

This is painfully beautiful. Particularly poignant as one of our friends lost their grandma today.

I really love these lyrics, and your delivery. Great hook! Your near rhymes: (spirit/withered) are wonderful. I'm a fan.

Jeez Louise, that’s stunning! I really of love the intentionally sparse arrangement. It lets the sweetness of your voice sit up front with heart of the song, and creates a lovely delicate and caring cradle for your story. It’s let’s the listener feel safe and held while they participate in the emotion. I mean, it’s Older Shoulders through and through. You emote beautifully, and the subject is universally relatable. I think you really have something here.
