Feb 2022 loops fuc girl-with-ukulele ukulele dreams polyrhythm
Nothing too exciting, just noodling around with loops and overdubs really, but I wanted to put up something for International Play Your Ukulele Day. I like how something kind of cohesive coalesced out of the wonky original loops.
(You're only lonely till you fall asleep)
I swam up to the moon through a sea of stars
And I opened the window so I could hear the cars
The bridge cut the light into flashes and flares
And my parents' voices hummed through the dark
I remember thinking we could be anywhere
At my right hand, Ursa, the bear
My feet cold in the San Francisco Bay
And Orion's belt bright in my hair
The moon leaned forward as if to say
Come to me, sing to me
The moon leaned forward as if to say
Come to me, sing to me
And the glow dissolved into edges and shapes
The stars gave way to landscapes
And as my eyes adjusted, the pale moon became
The face of my mother as she tucked me in

This is dreamy! Lovely loops and poetic lyric. Very cool experiment!
@balancelost Mar 2022
Layers of picky strings? Yes please! This makes me think of a mix between Animal Collective and Memory Drawings with a bit of Slint in the spoken vocals (though obviously this is bright and shiny instead of dark and brooding). That gives it an overall pastoral fantasy kind of feel which is magical. I'd love for you to continue with these kinds of ideas.
@nadine Feb 2022
Found this song by clicking on #polyrhythm. Still counting along. Okay the drumbeat is 4/4 and the uke? Triplet based? I'm out. Arghs!
I enjoyed the chant on that meditative drumloop with this hypnotic uke. Love how this works together! Lovely.
@serene123 Feb 2022
Wow! How have I missed this.. what a fantastic piece of work... Absolutely love the you're only lonely til you fall asleep refrain.. all the overlapping vocals.. spoken word and ukes... This is magical!! So gorgeous
@musicsongwriter Feb 2022
I like the idea of being lonely untill you fall asleep. So cool! Very beautiful, dreamy, magical and hypnotic song. Your voice is gorgeous!
@radiobenedetto Feb 2022
This is magical. I love the blend of upbeat whimsy from the Ukes, bright dreaminess from the vocal harmonies, and the contemplative voice over. I could picture it in soundtrack to a Wes Anderson movie. (Probly involving a set piece montage of a getaway from an ill conceived heist). Makes me smile:^)
@mikedebenham Feb 2022
This is lovely. I wonder if a loop song prompts a different kind of lyric to a strongly structured song - more contemplative and associative. Either way, top stuff.
@cleanshoes Feb 2022
This is enchanting. I love the looped ukulele and voice tracks as well as the way you play with rhythm throughout. The spoken word dream sequence is icing on the cake!
@ductapeguy Feb 2022

G: It reminds me of my family because all the sounds make me calm and my family makes me calm.
A: I liked it because it sounded familiar to me and it made me feel good inside.
P: I liked it because it sounded like 10 instruments but it is all just your voice and it's really calming.
@thelowestbitter Feb 2022
this is making me want to get my looper (FKA Vom;s looper) out. Those ukes sound really nice, and the vocal layering of the ooh ahs and you're only lonely till you fall asleep sound wonderful. Really liked the speak-singy vocals. This is great
@davidtaro Feb 2022
Lovely piece of music! The spoken word bit is particularly effective, again great poetry in the words. I also like how you hold that bit back, let the song kind of build in an organic way by gradually adding new loops and textures. I feel as though this would work great live with a looper pedal, if you were that way inclined :)
@bigmood Feb 2022
ooo i love this!! you got the uke loop down, and the spoken word works really well. I especially like the repeating vocal melody, it's hypnotic and it's a great background for the spoken word.
@majordanby Feb 2022
This is so delightfully quirky and pretty. I love the spoken word with the repeating lyric (which is inspired by the way).
I was going to do a spoken word on my first track but chickened out. You nailed it.
Awesome track; as always.
@sailingmagpie Feb 2022
"You're only lonely till you fall asleep." Wow, what a great line! The spoken word bits are a great choice. This is such an unusual song but it all hangs together really nicely. I want to hear more loop experiments from you!
@karlsburg25 Feb 2022
Was it play your ukelele day????Darn mine is still gathering dust and my guitarlele has 3 strings ;-) . and i love the fact you say you're just noodling around with loops and come up with something bloody beautiful and unique. I love the call and response style vocals going on. The layers from this are simply mind blowing. BTW have i said your voice is bloody brilliant (i may have forgotten to drop that in before) but it really chimes with my one working ear this morning ;-)
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Very nice uke usage here. Love the lyrics too. Ukuleles unite!
@cheslain Feb 2022
Intricately layered elements here perfectly in harmony. Very atmospheric and the spoken word delivery of the evocative lyrics is just perfect. Exquisite, wouldn't change a thing.
@alyxanderjames Feb 2022
This is so lovely and meditative!
@circle Feb 2022
it's like you to make an instrument I don't usually like sound really really good. beautiful lyrics, beautiful vocals. I remember you doing spoken word a little last year and it was great then and great now. I especially love that little "oh" sample, but really all the loops are fantastic. my favourite song I've heard so far!
@ampersandman Feb 2022
This got way bigger than I first expected. The spoken word + choir combo made me think of a Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie album. Nice!
@atam94 Feb 2022
Wonderful ukulele performance, and the spoken vocals were really cool. I enjoyed it a lot!
@seemanski Feb 2022
If this is what you create by having an "International Play Your Ukulele Day" and noodling around we need more days. I think we need more "International Play Your [INSTRUMENT GOES HERE] Day" days so we can hear what your noodling sounds like for them.
I love how this builds, the sweet ukulele tones that bounce between my ears are delicious, I think you have some strings somewhere in the background which is really subtle and brings it out, loved the spoken word sections.
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
How lovely is this? I love that three note vocal line that seems to be the thread around which everything else is woven. Really lovely intervals that really shine when the harmony lines come in shimmering and snug around them. And the instinct to go with free form spoken word for the verses is bang on. Some of those poetic images (especially the ones about the stars) are just beautiful.
All in all it's just a joyful listen.
@adforperu Feb 2022
I love the way you build this up, the ukes create a lovely bedrock, and those stacked vocals are so good. With everything looping beautifully, the spoken verses are so very compelling. I love the lyrics too!
@shortdan Feb 2022
The looping ukulele provides an interesting sonic platform here - both melodically and rhythmically. Love all the layered vocals and the contrasting styles of delivery. It's lovely is this!
@clioem Feb 2022
Lovely sounds and your vocals come in at brilliant timing! This inspires me to do my own overdub track soon! the imagery is so whimsical and magical too! Love it.
@celineellis Feb 2022
well i love how good your 'noodling' is! such a gorgeous sound of uke and voices. and i totally get where Helen is coming from about the hidden track!!
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
this is the most infectious use of parenthesis since the invention of the smiley. Absolutely stunning harmonies. Don’t think I’ve heard you so spoken word stuff before but it sounds amazing. The lyrics are so evocative and a wonderful call to dream-adventure
@helenseviltwin Feb 2022
This is like one of those glorious hidden track on a 90s CD that you listened to over and over, but never noticed the extra track until one day when you had it on while you're studying or just relaxing, and suddenly after the 10-15 minutes of silence, this glorious soundscape lullaby seems to come out of nowhere. Beautiful.
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
Disagree entirely with your "nothing too exciting" intro. This is an intoxicating, trance-y and enchanting song. I love everything about this. Those backing vocals (particularly the descending held notes) are just sublime. More noodling like this please!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
Well thats darn fine noodling! Very easy to listen to! Very good use of the loops, nicely layered. Great experimentation.
@w1n Feb 2022
Love the harp like quality of the ukes, the song has a very dreamy and comforting vibe.
@paulh1237 Feb 2022
The layering/panning of the different ukelele parts is super cool, I would describe the effect as "tingly", which partially explains why I am not a music journalist.
I love the backing vocals too, but that repeating "lonely when you fall asleep" line is going to be the thing that sticks in my head for the rest of the day. Love this!
@vomvorton Feb 2022
Extremely cool experiment! Love the shifting rhythms of the uke loops, and the spoken word gives me Cassandra Jenkins vibes. Makes for a soothing and nostalgic experience, nicely done!
@theodamus Feb 2022
Wooooooooow seriously wow this is so cool. The looping and harmonies are hypnotic and your lyrics absolutely shine with the spoken word delivery. It feels exactly like that weird moment between awake and asleep, child and adult. Beautiful!
@p3t3h4rv3y Feb 2022
Nice magnetic fields-y ditty, using lofi elements and the uke prettily.. that almost rhymes
